Why joint?

Apparently, because both parents would have to sign off on the procedure. Since the father won't sign off, it ain't happening. Its as if the judge ruled in favor of the father.

Hopefully she won’t kidnap the kid, change her and the boy’s name, and get some backroom quack to do the procedure.

That’s what it would appear to be. I wonder if the court appointed some attorney to represent the minor. When that happens, all bets are off. Court appointed minors attorneys can be good or absolutely evil.
