Deep-sea explorers and historians on Sunday announced they apparently found a second World War II-era Japanese aircraft carrier that sank during the Battle of Midway.
A review of sonar data captured Sunday showed either the Japanese carrier Akagi or the Soryu resting in nearly 18,000 feet of water in the Pacific Ocean more than 1,300 miles northwest of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Vulcan Inc. director of undersea operations Rob Kraft said.
The researchers used an autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, equipped with sonar to find the ship. The vehicle had been out overnight collecting data, and the image of a warship appeared in the first set of readings on Sunday morning.

I don’t think he has made it yet.
Ping.
Ordinary men did extraordinary things in WW2. My grandfather was a farm boy from Maine. Joined the Navy in ‘42 because my great grandfather was a Doughboy and didn’t want his son in the trenches. He served on one Tin Can the whole war. Sailed the Pacific from the Aleutians to Australia and most everywhere in between. His big battle was Philippine Sea.
When I was a kid he was always setting off metal detectors at the airport from some shrapnel in his leg from a bad gunnery accident that killed a bunch of his shipmates. RIP.
Don’t you mean “Shattered Sword?”
Its the Akagi. The Kaga was found only days before.
Could someone supply a translation of “Akagi” and
“Soryu”? Thanks.
“Akagi” translates as “Red Castle” “Soryu” translates as “Blue/Green Dragon”.
Was that Fletcher, or Admiral Ghormley’s call?
Are the Producers of the new Midway Movie bankrolling this?
I’m sure the timing is a complete coincidence.
That being said, it’s amazing what Human Ingenuity can accomplish. Sitting at the bottom in 18,000 feet of Water and there it is.
Pretty much the entire airfleet that bombed Pearl perished at Midway.
Indeed it is shattered, been a few months since I read it.
Yeah, jagged memory.
I would have preferred to read the paper version rather than Kindle. Most of the maps of the engagements are too small to see on a little screen.
yeah yeah, you guys are busting my balls bad.
Wife just told me this morning of the new film. Chock full of CGI no doubt, which I hate.
That and it has the Harrelson dork in it, so will likely pass until on netflix.
I have it in both Audible and Paperback.
Kaigun is also good
