According to James Hornfischer in Neptune's Inferno Fletcher stated
that it was his intention to pull the carriers out at the first opportunity in
the early planning stages of Operation Watchtower, much to the
consternation of Adm. Turner and Marine General Vandergrift. Once the air
cover was removed, Turner was forced to pull the transports leaving the
Marines with only a portion of their equipment and supplies.
