Looking for a way to connect a landline phone via a computer that is wirelessly connected to the Internet (which I using now to post this), without physically plugging into a modem/router (since that is on a different floor). This would have to work with cordless phones.
I see magicJack EXPRESS Digital Phone Service , but cannot find clear documentation as to whether one can get phone service using this without plugging into a modem, vs. just plugging into a computer that is wirelessly connected to the Internet.
Likewise magicJackHome 2019 VOIP Phone Adapter Portable, or OBi200 1-Port VoIP Phone Adapter ,
And ooma Telo Free Home Phone Service
Explanation We use a landline via Comcast Voice ($65.00 a month total), and use Vtech cordless phones (via line splitters) along with a stationary one. But most often the call gets dropped after a bit on the receiving end (we can hear them, but they cannot hear us) for about 30 secs, so they usually hang up. This occurs despite rebooting the modem, changing lines and splitters (there are 3 devices running off one line, and 2 cordless).
However, while a Comcast modem is used for our Comcast Voice, I cancelled the Internet service itself to save about $40.00 a month. And instead we connect to the Internet via a separate Comcast modem downstairs (as one ministry). We do no own the building and so running a cable is not an option.
I have not called Comcast yet, who will most likely blame the extra devices plugged in, but for now I want to supplement this spotty landline with a VOIP service, and am looking for advice from those who have experience with this. If reliable, maybe we could just port our number and go with the VOIP.
Thanks. Grace and peace thru Jesus the Lord.
Thanks, that is the type of service I am looking for.
or if you are stealing from your neighbors.
That is not what I am doing at all.
Interesting. Thanks.
Plug from ooma box to regular phone. If you have a set of wireless phones, base station is connected to ooma, then others can access
“I gather MJ also works just by being connected to a PC that is connected to the Internet via wireless.”
Don’t know how it would work if the PC is powered off. No power to the PC’s RJ-45 or USB ports. You can probably find out more at MJ’s website.
MJ can be plugged into a PC.
still scratchin my head. Where does the wireless internet come from ?
also, you already use cordless phones. You wont need splitters with MJ (Not sure why you need splitters now)?
Connect MJ to the router and the base to MJ. Once the base is connected the other cordless phones just get plugged into an electric socket and get paired with the base.
I think I am going to step out of this conversation as I am sure I am missing something.
Hope it all turns out ok
Good Luck.
Keep us posted as to what your solution is
Which means it does not need to be directly plugged into a router.

As I wrote in the OP, my computer is wirelessly connected to the Internet via a modem/router on a different floor,

One goes to the cordless phone base, and another to a enhanced wired LL phone, and one other line to a Caller I.D. box (quicker than using that on the cordless phone), and as said, one goes to a PC modem with shows and records the Called I.D. of incoming calls and time (and can zap teller marketeers). All of which is more convenient
Connect MJ to the router and the base to MJ.
Again, the router is on a different floor, and so having to plug MJ to the router there and receive calls upstairs (without running a cord to there) would require a different set of cordless phones, for as said, the system I am looking to provide for now is supplemental.
I think I am going to step out of this conversation as I am sure I am missing something.
The OP and some other responses need to be read to get the needed understanding, but thanks for your help.
As with google Voice, without a direct connection to a router, MJ does not work if the PC (OS) is not running, but the plan would be to run an old laptop continuously, (which also broadcasts (via Bluetooth) stored Christian media). Thank god for such tools, though I am usually rather averse to phone calls vs. face to face.
Thanks. It cost more (yet far cheaper than a standard utility com), and I would need to work in getting GV to work with that, but it seems to be a real viable option.
I tried magic jack, but it didnt work well for me.
Ooma costs us (IIRC) $60 annually... and it works - has from day 1.
I have Ooma forward calls to my mobile.
We kept our landline because some older relatives still called that number.
I used to have Service like that. It worked fine in my home office. It was spotty when on the road. Vonage? Something like that. It was 8 or 9 years ago...so I am sure things are much better now. The contract was month to month, so if it didnt work well you would not be out much.
Okay my bad. I read it too fast. I was thinking you meant 28kbs. Haha!
Anyway, you 28 down should be enough. You may have bad wiring past your D-Mark to your Router?
Thanks, but I think the issue is with the wireless signal having to go thru a floor and a couple walls over the course of about 20'. I have a pretty good USB wireless that can get the 5G signal also, but my W/10- 64 bit PC (4.0 Ghz Ryzen 3200G CPU; 16GB RAM - thank God) losses it, so I stick with the 2.4.
Note also that the https://www.megapath.com/speedtestplus/ connects to a server n NY, while I am in MA, and it takes a couple tries before it will connect.
Just tried it again and it reports

Sorry: I had meant to respond to post #89 (above yours) by aMorePerfectUnion, and to whom I though I was responding to in post 93. Hope it applies to you also though, and thanks for your help in any case.
