In answer to the first one, they once had to postpone an execution because the three drugs the use for the lethal injections had passed the expiration of their use by dates. . . So, did they postpone the execution, because they thought the drugs wouldnt work as well as they were supposed to, or because they drugs would work too well? 😁

They postponed the execution because they could not rely on the drugs to do their work humanely. I believe the convict is first anesthetized into an unconscious state, then muscle relaxants are administered that prevent breathing. After a short while the muscle relaxants are no longer needed to prevent breathing.
