When G. Gordon Liddy had a radio show, I listened to him daily. The Plumbers were looking for dirt on the DNC, and at the direction of John Erlichman, Liddy headed up the break in. Their goal was to find specifically details about a call girl ring the DNC was running out of a hotel across the street from The Watergate.
IIRC, John Dean was mixed up in the ring in some manner kinda backing why he ratted on everyone...to get his nads out of the vise grips.
I think I have this close to correct.
Liddy was a beast. Somewhere I have an autographed copy of “All The President’s Men”. Liddy signed it thus: “Herein are lies and bullshit”.

Well there’s also another story about it, but I don’t recall who told it. CIA spy on White House at that time was-Think it was E.Howard Hunt. Head of DNC Chair was well connected to the Law Firm with connections to Allen Dulles.
Operation 40 - CIA operation to train 40 people to form teams and train for assassinations - Main Target Castro. Teams had CIA, Mafia, and Cuban Exiles on each team. One of these teams actually helped ole Lee Harvey Oswald out.
CIA wanted to make sure that Dulles and his co-conspirator at that Law firm did not pass on info regarding JFK’s assassination, so they were going to monitor his phone calls so they could take action if it happened.
So basically Watergate never ended.
