U.S. ‘Deeply Concerned’ About Chinese Tankers Going Dark
Reuters/gcaptain ^ | October 16, 2019 | Timothy Gardner and Arshad Mohammed

The White House is warning Chinese shipping companies against turning off their ships’ transponders to hide Iranian oil shipments in violation of U.S. sanctions, two senior administration officials said.

“We’ve been messaging very heavily to the shipping companies, you don’t want to do this, it’s not worth it,” said one official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. “It’s incredibly dangerous and irresponsible behavior.”

How about turning away 10 random Chinese container ships from U.S. ports for every one that hides its transponder?

“It’s incredibly dangerous and irresponsible behavior.”

****************

That may be but until there are some kind of consequences China has no reason to stop doing this.

Now you’re talking. Time for credible enforcement.

Otherwise, they’ll just ignore all the verbal warnings.

They could be dark in an area where someone runs a “dark” weapons test.

Be a shame if those ships disappeared completely. A real shame...

it’s incredibly dangerous and irresponsible behavior

especially if there's a US warship within 10 miles, ready to collide.

As American's we have sort of a "Free Market" tendency. So private companies, by default, can deal and trade with whomever they choose. It's only when laws are passed that do not allow the sale of good & services between certain parties are restrictions imposed.

In order to stop ALL trade with china, the USA would have to impose laws that forbid purchasing anything from China, like what we did with Cuba.

Without transponders, those ships could simply disappear and never heard from again (assuming radio silence). Consequences could be missing Chinese ships in the near future.

Because the shipping ports of LA, SF, SD, Portland and Seattle make a ton of money doing it.

Just sink the tankers every time they show up in Iranian ports.

I am certain that the US has the ability by satellite to automatically track any ship above a certain size 24x7x365 automatically once it has been flagged by an analyst. And no, clouds and weather do not pose a problem.

Mining Iranian ports would take care of the problem. No need to worry about transponders.

So, if an errant torpedo or air-to-ground missile happens to hit a ship (or 10) with no transponder, then that’d just be a terrible, but easily-avoidable, accident.

Just sayin’.

I would think if the Chinese were so damned interested in signing a trade deal they wouldn’t do such things as obviously cutoff their transponders to avoid detection in dealing with the Iranians under sanction by the U.S.

Are the Chinese stupid, or are they flipping DJT the bird, because the Democrats are advising them to do so with the upcoming election they think they are going to make advances.

I guess either way they are showing us signs of stupid.

The Chicoms do whatever they have to do to pursue their self interest. Its time the U.S. does the same.

I’m just fed up with the games they’re playing and we seem to continue to play along.

Our government needs to wake up. Raise those tariffs.
