First in war, first in peace and now champions of the National League.
The Washington Nationals defeated the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, 7-4, on Tuesday night to complete a four-game sweep of the NL Championship Series and bring the nation's capital its first pennant since 1933.
Washington will play American League champions, either the New York Yankees or Houston Astros, in the 115th World Series, which starts next week.
The newly crowned NL champions broke open Tuesday night's game early, plating seven runs in the first inning before a raucous partisan crowd at Nationals Park.
Washington faced a threat from St. Louis in the top of the eighth inning with the bases loaded, and the score 7-4, but pitcher Daniel Hudson got out of it with a ground out.

The Senators also went to the World Series but lost in 1925 and 1933. The last time Washington was in the World Series, they lost to New York.
Fine post! The Nationals remind me of my Giants of a few years back. Scrappy, fun-loving guys who figure out ways to win — sometimes very improbably! Should be an entertaining Series, whoever they play.
The New York Giants.
The Nats will take a couple days off and then back to practice. GO NATS!!!
You show me who’s hurt and I’ll show you who wins.
Nat’s pitchers will be rested and ready.
Congrats Gnats.
The ALCS is about to take an interesting turn because Game 4 is almost certain to be rained out tonight.
Nats fan here. Despite the Nats dominant pitching in the series, the Cards made it worse with mental errors. Last nights miscue on an easy out turned a couple of runs into a full blown circus. The other night, that Osuna guy, dropped a ball, miffed a ball, and made a base running gaffe that the Nats took advantage of.
Maybe, but our pitching staff may need time to rest their arms.
The Senators only World Series win was in 1924.
Yep, it’s been 95 years since a Washington team won the World Series. The last World Series appearance by the original Washington Senators franchise was in 1933.
And this is the first World Series appearance in the history of the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals franchise.
It’s been a long time coming, in various ways, to see this team in the World Series.
The Washington Senators from 24 and 33 became the Minnesota Twins.
...7 days off, fell asleep, died in the World Series 4-1.

(smart move by the Astros, pulling Verlander and letting relievers help the Nationals swamp ‘em with runs)
We fans of the Tigers (hey! we’re out here!) loved Verlander, probably still do, but no matter how much of a terminator he is during regular season play, to put it kindly, he’s not been fantastic in the playoffs, either with the Tigers (btw, Max Scherzer of the Nationals and JV were Tigers teammates) or the Astros.
