Things would have turned out so much better had he gone to the door and called in “is everything okay?” as used to be the norm every where, and as still is the norm where they have competent police forces.

“If I had been the cop in this video I probably would have been killed.”

Killed by what?

The 8 year old kid playing a video game?

“From what I could see, the officer wouldn’t have had any idea of the poor lady’s race, or possible her gender, either.”

You are precisely correct. Race has nothing to do with this. What we really have is a stupid cop that must and will suffer the consequences most severely of his stupidity. It will be years in jail but that poor lady will still be dead when he gets out of jail. Why was this man even a cop with such bad judgemental skills.

Cops are the good guys. This cop was a stupid guy that should have never been a cop. His judgemental skills were not adequate, actually they were non existent.

The whole damn thing is just sad.

What’s the deal with bond in Texas? 200,000 seems real low for a murder rap. Does posting 10% spring him like a lot of other states?

Can I show up in YOUR house and SHOOT you for no reason? Then use a bunch of unrelated information to justify it ? COP NEED TO SERVE. COPS NEED TO PROTECT. COPS ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW. PULL THE TRIGGER GET THE FULL CONSEQUENCES.

I”f he thought it was his house he’d be looking at ten years out in 5.”

You also got to dye your hair blonde, cry, and get on the stand and sound like you have an IQ of 65.

This sh!t-for-brains was given massive authority over mere civilians, including you. With that authority came responsibility. That includes the expectation of coolness and willingness to not automatically respond to unexpected situations with gunfire.

This fumduck was incapable of such coolness. What's worse is that there is a STRONG probability that those who worked with him KNEW he was a weak reed, and that there is no process to get rid of him before this woman was shot, because he panicked.

That old Blue Code of Silence hides a lot.

...And any gun that wasn’t in her hand or lap doesn’t really help him...

And exactly how would a gun in her own hand in her own house help the cop?

I don't routinely sit around my house with a gun in my hand, but there are times when I will have one out if I am cleaning, lubricating, doing minor maintenance, etc. Is this a cause for a cop to look through my window and shoot me?

What about if I hear someone drive up to the house and am not expecting anyone? I have an absolute right to bear arms in my own house.

A female deputy in a courtroom or in the field is more likely to shoot than a man because they are NOT equal in a fight. Between this case and the white female cop who murdered a black man eating ice cream in his own home (she thought it was hers since the key worked) ... this argues against affirmative action for female cops.

Thanks for infecting some sanity into the thread, The trolls arguing it was a mistake are truly astounding.

It is depressingly frequent how often cops kill people during wellness checks.

This no-knock entry policy - whether a 2 AM raid or wellness check - has to change.

Reply to my post:

I suspect the cop went into the mindset that the person or persons in the house were all bad guys and just went on “autopilot” into kill mode. He should never had been a cop.

Oddly I had a “wellness check” at my home many years ago. The cops most politely knocked on my door at a late hour of the evening. I did have a weapon in my hand as this was my home. I had no idea whom was knocking on my door at that hour. When I opened the door and saw it was a policeman, I immediately told him, “I am armed and laying my weapon down.” I put it down where he could see it and welcomed he and she, his backup, into my home. Five minutes later they left. They also thanked me for telling them I was armed and where it was and putting it down in full view before I opened the door fully. They explained this type of call is the most dangerous call they make.

I’m of the opinion that officer’s duties should be reduced. We expect to much from cops. Officers are the body men of the state, who enforce laws with the threat of deadly force and they protect evidence for the state so people can be prosecuted. That’s all that should be expected of them.

What should be happening, instead of using cops, is that every police department should have, depending on the size of their territory and the people that station deals with, social workers whose sole job is to do welfare checks. I’d rather pay a person whose sole job is to do welfare checks at night then send a cop.

That’s all true.

However, all these cops had to do was knock or announce themselves at the door and everyone would still be alive.

I’m not saying police work is easy, it is a damn hard and stressful job, but damn, they can’t go blasting the heads off of innocent citizens who are minding their own business in the security of their own home.

Not only does it lead to someone being dead, but it breaks down the trust we have with the police.

Hey thats twice in the past year or so where a white Texas cop has shot and killed someone in their own home for no reason at all. If black cops were going around gunning down white people in the suburbs in THEIR houses, you’d see outrage on this board.

Let’s look at it from another perspective, assume the neighbor decided not to call the police, but do the “welfare check” himself. He’s poking around in the woman’s backyard with a flashlight and brought his licensed gun, just in case there’s a bad guy. He shoots the woman through her window because he “fears for his life”. Any chance he isn’t getting charged for murder and locked up for the rest of his life?

So why is it so different for a cop that ignores police training, police protocol, and common sense to shoot and kill someone through their own window, while minding their own business, in their own house? The same standards should apply. Being a cop is hard and has huge risks, like a lot of other jobs.

No, if the victim was white, it would still be murder.

He would be lucky if the DA did not argue that he was attempting to burglarize the house and charge him with Capital Murder.
