Texas Woman Was Playing Video Game With Her Nephew When Shot by Police

FORT WORTH — Minutes before she was shot and killed by a Fort Worth police officer, Atatiana K. Jefferson was playing video games in her bedroom with her 8-year-old nephew, a lawyer for her family said Sunday.

Ms. Jefferson, 28, was proud of being the “cool auntie” to her siblings’ children, and had stayed up into the wee hours of Saturday morning with her nephew, Xbox controllers in their hands, according to S. Lee Merritt, the family’s lawyer. But the pair grew concerned around 2:25 a.m., he said, when they heard rustling outside the house and saw flashlights.

Cops should not be shooting people through windows without knowing what’s going on.

No doubt. They should have knocked on the door and announced themselves. Also, if a couple cops go sneaking around a house at O'dark-thirty, shining flashlights around, the last thing they should be surprised to see, is an occupant looking out the window to see what is going on. In fact, they should have expected it. How the hell is a cop so startled, so terrified at the sight of a woman looking out her bedroom window, that he immediately shoots her dead?

“Blame the busybody neighbor who called the insta-shooters aka cops.”

Look, I’m going to blame them, not the neighbor. Can you imagine how bad that guy feels? Why the heck should he have to feel this way.

Sure, sure, maybe he should have just rung the bell himself, but you know I don’t know that. He was concerned, he called a NON EMERGENCY number for the police, I can’t fault his actions.

What the heck the cop was thinking or doing is beyond me.

I know Ft Worth. I am more afraid of law enforcement than criminals.

No, two stories are being conflated here. The woman who was murdered in her own house JUST happened. The cop who was sentenced to ten years — who happened to be a woman — was sentenced just last week in a separate incident.

Not sure how you can be so certain that what the cop did was so outrageous. The police get called to what essentially was a suspected burglary in progress. The door is wide open at 230 am. Also, a handgun was found next to the deceased. This is a tragedy. Don’t compound it by prejudging

Forgive me for sounding cynical, but if the victim had been a poor white woman living in a run-down trailer in a trailer park that was on the “wrong side” of the tracks would we be having this discussion?

Would it have even made the national news?

(Is anybody else getting the suspicion that that there is more to this story than what we are being told? I have been suspious of the media when it comes cops ever since the Rodney King situation.)

I have personally experienced the chore of finding good people. Technicians are easy to find, good ones are not. Teachers are everywhere, good ones are sparse. Go to a restaurant, how was the service? Notice every once in a while you get lucky and get a good server. The list goes on. What makes you think it is any different for the police?

HA! Now that you say it just that way it’s just like what happened in Minneapolis with that cop and the Australian woman. She too had called for help. She too got shot dead. That guy freaked because the woman who had called them approached their car in her pajamas, holding her cell phone.

Here's a frame just before the shot. You can see the woman in the window pretty clearly.

“the police training and hiring is at fault.”

I believe it. The PD here has a “human resources” department staffed by 20-something civilians who don’t know their asses from their elbows.

Experienced officers never even get a chance to look at prospective hires until they get past those cretins.

It’s Cowtown. You have no idea how crazy the metro mess has become in the last 15 years.

It should be extracted from the pension fund of that police department.

No one could possibly believe that the fellow officers of that homicidal retard weren’t aware of his level of incompetence and violence.

I live here, born and raised. It was a bad shoot, no doubt about it. The cop should be tried for murder.

But the fallout over this will be anything but commensurate. It will be used as currency for more “hate whitey” rhetoric. The race hustlers are licking their chops.

I can't tell much by that one. She must have been sitting down or something by the way he is shinning the light. In this photo you can tell she is now above the lower window looking out. That's when he pulled the trigger. This pic is a millisecond before he blasts her, as shown in the gif.
