As the anti-flying movement known as “flight shaming” is gaining momentum across Europe, Switzerland is adding new train services to some of its international routes.

The TGV company Lyria, which is owned jointly by the Swiss Federal Railways and France’s SNCF, is adding trains to its high-speed link between major Swiss cities and Paris.

Beginning on December 15th, 30% more connections will be offered to the French capital from Geneva, Zürich, Lausanne and Basel. That means an increase from the currently available 13,500 seats daily to 18,000 by the end of 2020.

The goal of the expanded service is to shift passangers (sic) from short-haul flights to rail. […]

In fact, according to a poll conducted by the Zürich-based Sotomo research institute in September, climate change is among the top concerns for the Swiss voters in the upcoming October 30th elections.

The Parliament has decided to start taxing plane tickets — CHF 30 to CHF 120 per flight, depending on the distance traveled. …

All this will do is flip on the Flixbus operation to take folks across the border to the nearest non-Swiss airport, and they fly from there without the stupid tax-fee.

People will point at the questionable reliability of trains, non-op situation with toilets, limited seating, etc.

These trains have sails and ride by wind power alone?

Not even that far back. I recall at least in the US on a certain date their dream was achieved. 09/11/2001 IIRC.

I SERIOUSLY doubt this news. But why anyone would want to fly over Switzerland rather than take a train and see the most beautiful scenery in the world is beyond name.

When you consider that the state of Texas is of the size of Western Europe, taking a train from France to Germany is like taking a train from Houston to Dallas. They make it sound like you are taking a train from New York to LA.

I just got back from France.

Their trains are most definitely not “going back to the 1900s”.

When you’re going from Swiss cities to Paris, most likely on business rather than vacation, sometimes time is more essential than viewing the scenery, even with the TGV Lyria (dumb name) purportedly making the journey from Paris to Zürich in four hours.

None of the rail companies in either France or Switzerland are privately owned; they’re all owned by the state.

Those trains are also built using some miracle substance. Unlike steel, which consumes massive quantities of fossil for mining, refining, transportation, and manufacture, this new material just appears in malleable form and then hardens to finish.

No they have a windmill on top of the lead engine that way they get a free battery charge and never have to use fuel outside of the starter motor.

Well, in the 1930’s and ‘40,s, they were putting people in boxcars.

Swiss trains are less swishy than the French or German ones but they sure do run on time. :)

Trains are fine if you have the time and want to enjoy the scenery. But planes get you there much faster.

I don’t know about the prices in Europe, but here in the States, we pay more to take the train (sleeper car) than a plane. We have done some excellent train vacations. It is like a land cruise.
