I am not asking for professional medical advice, but personal opinions about the benefits or obstacles about statins.
I do not take statins
My husband had a reaction to statins: inflammation of the muscles
His doctor said to never take a statin drug again.
So...
Instead hubby and I take policosinol to naturally reduce cholesterol levels.
Here is link to informative article:

Do statins really work? Who benefits? Who has the power to cover up the side effects?
Of particular interest to me is the emerging studies on the connection between ALS and statins. My neighbor just died of ALS and his wife told me he was on statins for a "very long time". Just one data point I know.
STAY AWAY!
Statins are actually so successful that the govt was on the verge a few years ago of recommending that everyone take them as a preventative.
*** “Cholesterol itself is not the problem, your body makes it” ***
I am 100% behind that, whatever you don’t consume the body will make.
I take 0 Meds and am in a LOT better shape now (and 50lbs lighter) than when My DR was feeding me Drugs.
I fired him as my GP, I still see him at Church but now he outweighs me. I like him, He takes cash and last time I saw him he sewed me up when no one else would so for me he is a Good Guy!
Mitochondia tend to atrophy due to statins, which a way of saying that they shrivel and die. Stress was my oblique way of saying that. Muscle pain is a symptom. Muscles and liver both rely on a large contingent of mitochondria. Kill too many of then and tissue damage follows.
Read this:
And this:
Lipitor 40mg once daily. Cholesterol 130. No pains. No issues.
My Doc, graduated #1 from Univ Penn Med School, told me a little talked about benefit of statins is they strengthen existing plaque in the arteries. This plaque has a propensity to shear or splinter. This area then has a much higher likelihood of forming a blockage, or clot. Blockages are a problem. Clots cause both heart attacks and strokes. ALL arteries, over time, have some plaque buildup. Strengthening this plaque helps prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Follow your doctor’s advice for a while and see how it goes. That’s what you pay him for
*** “ So what if it contradicts your own REAL doctor” ***
No reason you can’t ASK your own REAL doctor when the last time he read a STUDY or questioned the Pharm sales folks.
I questioned MY “REAL” doctor and he told me “Keep doing what you are doing”
I am 100% MED FREE
Banking about $375 per that used to be pills
YMMV
Nattokinase is a very good option with or without statins.
Japanese have very low heart attack issues even with slightly less cholestorol but higher blood pressure. Natto is thought to be one reason why and there are several studies to prove it.
And research supplements on line. Red Yeast Rice is the most commonly recommended supp but RYR is simply a statin. Statins are generally bad news, especially for over 60s for whom they do nothing statistically good and should be avoided and obviated by exercise and diet.
What do evidence-based researchers say?

I take 40 mg of Lipitor nightly. I have been doing this for at least 20 years. I have no side effects. I have a family history of deaths do to heart problems and I have had high cholesterol in the past. My cardiologist put me on this because of my family history and my cholesterol has remained good. Im 76 and my father died of a heart attack at 68, my brother at 68 and my mother at 60. Im the only one left of my nuclear family. My moms side of the family has lost seven of 9 members all due to heart attacks and heart issues. The remaining two family members are in their early 80ties and have suffered heart attacks. A lot depends on your heath and your familys.
Listen to your physician and act accordingly. God Bless
I put it off as long as I could. Family history finally won over and I am taking them. No problems other than remembering to take them every night.
You re not a doctor and you don’t know what the f you are talking.
I have high cholesterol been taking statins for years it maintains the appropriate level for my cholesterol no side effects whatsoever
Your brilliant idea of diet is totally worthless if your genetics demands statins to avoid cardiac serious cardiac problems if you don’t know what you’re talkin about why don’t you just not post.
Wow..you’re so brilliant you should be writing for medical journals or better yet why don’t you just write and discount any evidence-based medical research good Lord!
Yeah just do some more research you’re too brilliant to be wasting your time on just a website here
I can’t take them. Legs hurt for six months after taking a statin for one month. This was my second attempt to take a statin.
Hey next time I have a medical problem I think I’ll just call on you after all you know everything why bother with going to a doctor or reading the research when all we have to do is talk to you morons on this site complete morons
Medical research indicates some people may have to take several yes several different types of statins until there’s one that works for them without side effects just a possibility
Been taking a high dosage since the 80’s...No problems that I’m aware of...
