I am not asking for professional medical advice, but personal opinions about the benefits or obstacles about statins.

I usually am able to control cholesterol with diet. But if it does get out of the normal range I use 20 mg of atorvastatin and haven’t noticed any side effects.

I had issues with muscle pain in my legs, had to start CoQ10 (which made a lot of difference) - is that what you are referring to as stress?

What is the liver damage concern?

Been on them after heart attack 2 years ago. No negative symptoms. LDL 66. Doctor says I’m low enough where there is some evidence that plaque could be reversing.

Listen to your doctor, or get a second opinion from another doctor and not random folks on the internet.

Yes, this.

I was afraid of the side effects so I did the “clean eating” (no sugar, no white flour/rice/potatoes; lots of fruits and vegs, olive oil, smaller servings of meats & cheese, etc.) Was able to bring my bad cholesterol number down, and lost weight. Then exercised by walking more. I’m used to eating this way now and feel better.

There are a lot of factors here. Genetics, diet, exercise, lifestyle, body weight, etc. I have no problems but I walk 5 miles a day, am not overweight, eat an incredible amount of garlic, lots of lentils and whole wheat kernals, take a mushroom tea of Ganoderma lucidum, and there you have it, my three cents.

Statins have worked for me, with no side effects. I have been taking aspirin daily for 30 years.

My ex-internist pressured me to take a statin, but I refused because my cardiologist (who is an osteopath) opined that I should try diet and exercise therapy instead. I did exactly that and mitigated the need for a statin. Flash forward five yeas, and my cardio doctor prescribed a generic statin at 50% of the lowest dose (I cut them in half). I still exercise every day, eat healthy, drink red wine etc., but after taking the statin, my blood numbers are amazing: Total cholesterol, 137; HDL, 52; LDL, 68; and triglycerides, 92. Yes, these are amazing numbers, and perhaps they are attributable to lifestyle changes; but honestly, I have been working out regularly for the last 45 years (I’am 60) and my weight hasn’t changed all that much (6’2”, 210 lb.). I give credit to the statin, combined with daily exercise and a balanced diet.

I am unable to take statins due to liver issues. I did work for a rather prominent Cardiologist that told me, as well as, his patients to NEVER take statins as the side effects weren’t worth it. Additionally he said that statins were for life and were just a temporary fix if your daily habits didn’t change.

I could barely walk after taking Crestor for about 10 days.

Here’s one. My husband takes them, all ok. I took them for about 3 days; got a floater in my eye. I researched and found that that is a side effect, so I quit. Doc said, “Oh the statins have really helped.” I said, “I am not taking them. I just quit eating so much butter on my bread.” haha

BUT — down the road, when we went to get long-term insurance, my husband could NOT get it bc he took statins. I could, bc I do not take them.

What drugs has he or she mentioned specifically?

I have been taking Atorvastatin for a few years for cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes.

The diet and exercise route was not gonna happen, well, not w/o a boot to the butt anyway. Fortunately my docs don’t wear boots.

Hahahahaha. Don’t consult actual doctors, consult some quacks you tube. What great advice.

I wonder what your legal advice sounds like.

Watch for "flu like symptoms".

Pretty much any statin will do me in.

One person’s experience, YMMV.

I am someone with Type I diabetes since 1980, thus now prone to hypertension and its consequences. I take two anti-hypertensives, and was on generic Lipitor for awhile,

In 2016, even though I had been on generic Lipitor a few years, I stopped taking it based on things I had read, which my doctor then strongly advised against.

In October 2017 I woke up one morning with bad double vision, which didn’t get better, I went to the ER. I got an MRI and other tests, and the doctors’ best guess was that I had had a very mild stroke. I started taking statins again. And so far so good,

If I were you I would take them.

You know, there is very good anecdotal information in a chat room. You don’t have to blindly follow it, but if something pops up that makes sense to you, so much the better.

All online advice is bad?? So is every doctor’s advice. Some docs are good. Some are lazy. Some are pill-pushers. I’m with this FReeper who is searching for information.

You are spoiling everything! What fun is it if uneducated bumpkins and other assorted baboons cant give medical advice? So what if it contradicts your own REAL doctor. After all, you only live once.
