For the first time ever, scientists have found corals that were thought to have been killed by heat stress have recovered, a glimmer of hope for the world's climate change-threatened reefs.
The chance discovery, made by Diego K. Kersting from the Freie University of Berlin and the University of Barcelona during diving expeditions in the Spanish Mediterranean, was reported in the journal Science Advances on Wednesday.
Kersting and co-author Cristina Linares have been carrying out long-term monitoring of 243 colonies of the endangered reef-builder coral Cladocora caespitosa since 2002, allowing them to describe in previous papers recurring warming-related mass mortalities.
Heat waves kill these animalsby either essentially roasting them alive or causing them to eject the symbiotic algae that live within them and provide them nutrients, thus leading to coral bleaching.
But the researchers found that in 38 percent of the impacted colonies, the polyps had devised a survival strategy: shrinking their dimensions, partly abandoning their original skeleton, and gradually, over a period of several years, growing back and starting a new skeleton.

Since it has been much warmer than it is now, it follows that coral found ways to adapt or there wouldn’t be any coral.
There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Now, mostly dead is slightly alive.
In Middle School, I was told l it takes thousands of years for coral to grow; I remember this vividly.
Don’t these globull warming believers also believe in evolution?
We have plants and even crustaceans here in the desert that “die” and then come back as a survival trait. Nature is a wondrous thing.

More leftist environmentalists who lie to get popularity or important. F the French Scuba diver telling this!
That and that fossil fuels were created by rotting dinosaur carcasses.
Maybe just maybe it was not the warming that killed the coral but some other ‘natural’ cause.
Oh sorry I forgot that it was settled science and cannot be questioned.
Therefore what the researched actually found was zombie coral
It is how they survive ice ages. Most living reefs will be exposed to air.
Oh my goodness! I thought I was alone in the idea that so called fossil fuels are just natural substances that are just under the Earth’s surface that are not from dead stuff.
Kinda like brain dead...not really dead...just enough so that we can harvest your organs.
Gods creation adapts.
When in Australia this year, I was told by a marine biologist the great barrier reef is about 10,000 to 15,000 years old.
She showed us limestone rock that was just a few years old 5-10!
She pointed out an entire small island that did not exist when Captain Cook sailed through 200 years ago.
I was amazed at how fast coral grew and rock formed.
*ping*
The Great Barrier Reef used to be completely out of the water. It survived.
