The rollout of Maines new law allowing doctors to prescribe life-ending medication has moved faster than in other states with similar laws, though major health care providers in the state wont allow so-called death with dignity until at least January.
Maine is now one of nine states to allow people to adopt such a law after it was passed by the Democratic-led Legislature earlier this year and signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills in June.
Adults with a terminal illness who are deemed mentally competent can request life-ending medication from a doctor, who can choose to fill the prescription after two oral requests, two waiting periods and one written request with recordkeeping requirements.
It took effect on Sept. 19 after a peoples veto initiative from opponents of the law failed to get enough signatures to make the ballot. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services has issued emergency rules governing the law and the Legislature will consider rules next year.
Wide adoption will take time. Maines largest provider will allow physicians to participate, but not until January. Others have a moratorium in place. Religious hospitals wont be participating. There are also questions about the drugs that will be used. Heres how the program has begun.

Doctor please kill me!
Not!!!!!!!
What will happen if not enough people take advantage of “death with dignity” on a voluntary basis?
Gonna need your lobster bib.
I think it's time for her to experience "death with dignity".I'll be on the phone tomorrow to arrange the details.
No, termination it is, Grandma. Where there's a Will there's a way.
Crossing Maine off my list. Ok, it was never on it.
One must suppose the meds prescribed are considered humane by the State Government. That being the case the shortage of drugs for prisoner executions is a non issue. But one must ask if life in prison is now a terminal illness under the new law.......
Inquiring minds want to know!
Are forms of dementia considered a terminal illness?
If so, sufferers better pray they can trust the person/s entrusted with their care.
” Religious hospitals wont be participating.”

For now. This is how these bills always begin in order to be passed. Then later they change.
I remember the promise made when abortion was first made legal.....taxpayer money would NOT be used to pay for it. In time that changed without us even noticing it. Federal funding went to planned parenthood.
Thanks for posting. No fault murder.
Note to anyone with anything of value: Get out of Maine before your heirs kill you off!
Perhaps we should send them some names for their mailing list. :)
The best way to greet this is with some pretty hard hitting sarcasm, in several different directions.
1) Do pictorials of ‘death with humiliation’, showing people being hunted down by evil doctor clowns.
2) Insist that those in prison with long sentences be permitted to commit suicide in a ‘dignified’ manner. Given a black suicide pill almost certain to kill them.
3) Another pictorial of an evil doctor clown trying to persuade parents to kill their teenager, even though they don’t want to die, either because the teen is a homosexual, or wants a sex change. “It’s just better this way.”
4) Evil doctor clowns killing unconscious patients because they want to remove their healthy organs. “We’ll just say they died during the operation.”
I lived there for a few years. Honestly, if I had to stay there much longer I can see this as a practical law. I was happy to leave and never go back.
Here in Oregon we have a similar law. We also have the Oregon Health Plan for low income people. Lars Larson our local talk show host discovered that certain treatments people need for cancer are not covered, but the plan will always fully fund medicines and doctor visits needed to kill yourself.
Yes,there’ll be a court challenge...
Hey, don’t blame me....I didn’t vote for these crazies, especially Gov. Janet Mills (Bitch, Maine).
80% of Maine...the Second Congressional District....is rather conservative and strong Second Amendment / Constitutional Carry country. The president carried this district by 10 points.
It’s the First Congressional District in southeast Maine.....moonbat central....that screws up the voting totals statewide.
They take my pain pills away because they may harm me, but they will give me a death pill because oe terminal pain.
Confusing!!!!!
