Woman taunts lion after climbing into enclosure at Bronx Zoo (video)

A woman climbed over a safety barrier at New York City’s Bronx Zoo last week and made her way into the lion exhibit, standing dangerously close to one of the animals.

The woman, standing a few feet away from a male lion, waved her hands and moved her body as if she was dancing. The incident was captured in photos and videos that were posted on Instagram.

It's unclear how long the woman stayed in the enclosure. There was a moat-like barrier between the lion and the area where the woman was standing, NBC New York reported.

No one was injured. In a statement, the zoo called the incident a violation and said it had filed a complaint for criminal trespass.

"This action was a serious violation and unlawful trespass that could have resulted in serious injury or death. Barriers and rules are in place to keep both visitors, staff and animals safe," the zoo told NBC New York. "We have a zero tolerance policy on trespass and violation of barriers."

Heck - that lion could have eaten for a week off that! The keepers could take that week off!

I frequent the Bronx Zoo. There is no way she’s getting over that moat without a bridge/ladder of some sort. Same for the lion. Fake News as always.

Perhaps the lion prefers lean meat.

Welcome to the jungle.

I could say something here, but it probably would get me banned.

It doesn’t. The railing is there to keep idiot humans from falling into the moat. It’s the moat that keeps lions from dining on idiots. It says a lot about the stupidity of people that there is no need for a railing to keep lions from falling into the moat.

Good point.

It makes zero sense to taunt a 500 lb killing machine which considers you a potential meal. I wouldn’t even try to taunt my housecat when she’s in a bad mood, and my dogs learned not to mess with her years ago.

They are big moats, wide enough to prevent the average unmotivated lion from jumping, plus some extra footage should one have a burst of adrenaline upon seeing a tasty morsel dancing on the other side. Deep enough to prevent a lion from jumping out on the visitor side.

A lion, though, that’d be a lot harder.

I remember reading an SRA story in elementary school about a guy who fought a tiger and lived. He killed the tiger by shoving his arm down it's throat as far as it would go, and the animal choked to death.

You know it sucks when that is your best option.

Anybody else remember SRAs? Independent learning. It was a thing in the Seventies.

So if the moat protects, lions cannot swim?

Oh, man, I loved the SRAs ... that's what gave me my love for reading, I think.

And I did the SRAs in the early 60's. Let's see, I would have been in 3rd through 6th grade ... 1962-1965 ...

LOVED those. Went to a Catholic School and was way ahead. Nun sat me down in front of the box and said, “Finish this and we’ll talk.”

I benefited greatly from benign neglect as a child.

SRAs were the best. The teacher wouldn’t bother you as long as you kept busy.
