In 2014, the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) began a 5-year study, in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST). The goal of the study is to estimate white shark population size and local abundance using traditional and innovative mark-recapture techniques. ..snip...

DMF has been the beneficiary of unprecedented support for white shark research from AWSC. The Conservancy is a private, non-profit organization based in Chatham, MA. AWSC supports scientific research, public education, conservation efforts, and public safety initiatives related to white sharks. Since 2013, AWSC has loaned and donated services and equipment in support of DMF white shark research efforts and the agency is extraordinarily grateful.

AWSC has donated vessel time, spotter pilot services, and helped with the purchase, deployment, and retrieval of moored acoustic receivers and buoys. Without AWSC, DMF would not have been able to do the population study.

Although heavily vested in white shark research, AWSC has not conducted shark research activities for itself or for DMF. As a result, AWS is not required to get a shark research permit, nor is AWSC regulated by DMF. To date, AWSC has simply donated services, vessels, and other equipment that DMF and other groups use to conduct shark research...snip...

For the last four years, DMF and AWSC have worked together to better research white sharks in Massachusetts.

Once we get through October, white shark populations in Mass. wanes, although I am sure some will stay well into November and a rare one staying well into the winter.

One thing to remember about the AWSC and the State's shark researchers is they didn't create the white shark seal problem. That was done by the Federal Gov. proecting both the seals and white sharks. - Tom

We are through the two most likely months, August and September, for an incident with a white shark and a beachgoer.

. The beach goers and the sharks will thin out now.

Shark incident Mitigation suggestions for next year are due shortly from the Woods Hole Group , a company hired by Cape Cod towns to make their beaches safer for the public. - Tom

There was a fatal shark attack last year on Cape Cod. Before that the most recent one was in 1936.

Here is info on that earlier attack.

In 1936 Joseph Troy Jr. age 16, was living in the Dorchester section of Boston, on Talbot Ave.. He went to visit his uncle Fred, who had a summer home in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts on Euclid Ave. at Hollywood beach. On July 25th Troy and Walter Stiles, a friend of Troy’s uncle, were swimming"a baseball throw distance" off the end of the pier off Grand Ave. when the attack occured.

Between 3 - 4 PM, Stiles saw a shark suddenly appear next to Troy. The shark grabbed Troy by the left leg and pulled him underwater. Stiles was about 10 feet away and went to Troys assistance; diving down to try to help him. Ultimately he was able to get hold of Troy when the unconscious boy surfaced in a pool of blood.

Stiles started towing Troy to shore while shouting for help. It appeared at first that people thought it was a hoax. Then they realized something was wrong, and thinking it was a possible drowning they telephoned for a local doctor. A shark attack is the last thing any bystander would expect to have happened. The words "shark attack" wouldn't be in anyone's vocablary in 1936.

Mr. Herbert Fisher, who had just came in from sailing, responded to Stiles cries for help, and rowed over to assist him. Fisher helped Stiles in getting Troy into the boat, and rowed them to shore. Troy was placed on a door and carried up to a car. Dr. Irving Tilden rushed Troy to St. Lukes Hospital in New Bedford, about 12 miles away. The femoral artery had not been severed, but Troy’s left leg was mangled, and a piece of the leg "about the size of a 5 lb. roast beef was missing". A surgeon had finished amputating Troy’s leg; when Joseph’s condition worsened. Joseph passed away about 8:30 PM that evening.

Dr. Hugh M. Smith, former Director of the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, who did the investigation into Troy's death, concluded the shark involved was: "a man-eater (Carcharodon carcharias)” What we call today a white shark. - Tom
