East Bay man convicted of kidnapping, raping, murdering 81-year-old woman

MARTINEZ — A man was convicted Thursday of kidnapping, raping and murdering an 81-year-old El Cerrito woman taking a morning walk seven years ago.

“Oh, my God. … They got it wrong!” the defendant, Jonathan Jackson, cried out, sobbing and bowing his head as the guilty verdicts were read in Department 5 of the A.F. Bray Courthouse. A few feet away in the courtroom gallery, Jackson’s mother also began to sob.

His victim, El Cerrito resident Sun Yi Kwon, was out on a morning walk in January 2012 when she was attacked, dragged into a secluded area in Richmond, raped and severely beaten. She died six months later after a bout with pneumonia, which prosecutors argued was a result of the attack.

Jackson, linked to the crime in 2016 through DNA found in semen left at the scene, took the stand during his trial and insisted he wasn’t Kwon’s attacker. He said he was drunk and high on LSD that night when he came across Kwon’s partially nude, lifeless body, at which point he was overcome by a random necrophilic urge and masturbated over her.

His attorney did not immediately comment on the verdict, but said in court he plans to file a motion for a new trial.

The verdict means Jackson likely will be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. His monthlong trial became contentious at times, with Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney Aron DeFerrari openly mocking a defense expert witness who testified that Kwon would have died from throat cancer regardless of the attack.

The jury reached its verdict after barely a full day of deliberations. After the verdict was read, jurors were polled, one by one, on the murder count. Each of the 12 jurors uttered “yes” to guilty for first-degree murder.

A huge victory for the CSI folks at Contra Costa County, and the cops manning the cold case files, and closure, of a kind, for the family members of the victim.

Even if his story is true, when you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. And no reasonable man would believe his story.

I'm sorry I read this. Just when you think human beings could not possibly go lower, they prove you wrong.

There are no words.

And what this perpetrator gets, no matter *what* it is, will not be justice. Justice would have been swift, severe, and certain.

The necrophilia defense

From the same part of the world that brought you the "Twinkie Defense".

I’d put his lawyer away with him since he probably came up with the absurd defense.

Justice is not to be found in this world, but in the next.

Some people, however, deserve to breathe only the best, purest, industrial grade dry nitrogen gas available.

He had the bad luck of being a citizen.
Had he been a fraudulently documented foreigner, he likely would have walked.

No, nitrogen asphyxiation is too painless.

Some WWI mustard or phosgene gas will give the condemned enough conscious agony before death to contemplate the error of his ways.

"He said he was drunk and high on LSD that night..."

He was probably a bisexual weaboo, high on pot and ecstasy, and thought his poor victim was Japanese.

I once helped a friend clean up her 85 year-old mother’s home after the old lady was raped and nearly killed by a young burglar.

There was blood everywhere. She fought with all her strength. A sweet little Catholic lady who spent her days watching TV and saying her rosary.

The takeaway here is that rape is a violent crime and a rapist is a psychopath motivated by rage & a desire to humiliate and destroy the victim.

Rape has nothing to do with the woman’s age, looks, or “sexiness.”

Can’t quite understand how she lived for another 6 months after the pervert came across her lifeless body.
Maybe he figured sex with a corpse didn’t carry same penalty as murder.??
Logic doesn’t seem to apply to the convict.

Wow, you’re right.
That does seem like a major inconsistency in the perp’s story. I completely missed it!
