Barack and Michelle Obama Want to Hear Your Stories About How Your Neighborhood Shaped You
Newsweek ^ | 9/27/2019 | Chantil Da Silva

Alongside a photo of the two siblings standing outside together, Obama wrote: "When I think back to some of the earliest days of my childhood, I remember moments like this—my brother Craig and I, smiling outside on the South Side of Chicago."

"It was there, in a diverse and changing neighborhood, that I began a journey that took me to settings I never could have imagined at that age. It's the place that made me who I am," she said.

Today, Obama is known around the world as a former first lady, an established lawyer and the author of a best-selling memoir, Becoming. Meanwhile, her brother, Craig Robinson, who is two years older than his sister, had built a career as a college basketball coach and broadcaster before landing his current role as the vice president of player and organizational development for the New York Knicks.(snip)

"I'm thinking about my neighborhood because in a few weeks, Barack and I will be joining changemakers from the South Side and around the world for our third Obama Foundation Summit," she said.

The Obama Foundation Summit takes place on October 28 and 29 and is expected to include "stories from authors and artists, luminaries and leaders, about how the places they've been made them the people they've become." (snip)

The former first lady then asks Obama Foundation supporters to "show us a place that shaped you" and "tell us how that place gives you purpose," providing a link to a form that supporters can fill out.

Submissions are expected to be featured at the Summit, as well as on Obama.org, Obama said, "so that guests can witness the stories of folks like you who help support the Obama Foundation and make our work possible."

I grew up in rural Iowa in a very drafty house with wood, then coal heat, including smoke filling the house whenever the stoker ran low on coal. We had mice. And rats.

We had one bathroom for 7 people.

We waited at the end of our driveway fall winter and spring regardless of the weather for the bus ride to school. Cold, wet, we got it al. Then another hour bus ride at the end of the day home.

We had a small town school only through 8th grade offering two sports, basketball. That is - Boy’s basketball and girls basketball.

Nobody I knew played golf.

I wished for bed sheets one year for Christmas.

White privilege was kind of a challenge.

Barack, when I was in 8th grade, a nice black couple moved next to us. It was a “changing” neighborhood. One night some black guys stole their TV and other items. Then I released convict moved next to them. Also, when I went outside, groups of black kids threatened me. My brother and some friends had a brick thrown the rear window of the car they were in. I hated my life in that neighborhood. We eventually moved to an all-white neighborhood and life was much easier on our family. Are you going to use my story? I hope so!

I’ll do them a real favor and NOT share my thoughts.

The neighborhood was quiet. We played night and day with the neighbor kids all over their dairy farm. There was an irrigation canal that flowed by our house, lined with giant poplar trees, where we floated on tubes and made treehouses and rope swings, and floated maple seed helicopters down to the water. We shot our 22’s at birds. We rode bikes everywhere and played football and softball day and night.
The neighborhood shaped us. No regrets.

Drugs, booze, rape, gang shootings, riots, filth sprinkled with fairy dust, so how’s it going for you two multi millionaires who came from this? encouraged this while in power and fed it?

Hi Barack. The city neighborhood I grew up in turned into a sh1thole. After I was chased by a some “teenagers” who were telling “get that white boy”, the event shaped me to eventually move rural.

Hussein is confused, believing that the elite, uppity, private, Punahou School in Honolulu is the south side of Chicago. It could happen to anyone; they’re very similar, doncha know?

The pavement apes moved in and ruined my neighborhood.
