The ship is in port for an extended period. What gives? Girlfriend / wife problems? The Navy life can be very tough on relationships.
How sad.
Three young, healthy guys.
This is very sad. But I am curious as to their back stories. Any of them LGBT? Any of them lost a promotion to a “protected class”? ETC
divorce and ruinous family court rulings would be my guess
That’s terrible.
Sleep deprivation can really depress a person. During a refueling overhaul I was in 102 hour weeks were the norm for Engineering during the last half or so of the overhaul. Seems endless. It really wears you down.
I looked it up. The suicide rate is 14.7 per 100,000. For the crew of 5,000 there should be .7 suicides per year. Their rate is very high. The highest rates are in middle aged white men, which are 69% of the total.
The article’s authors really let us down by not providing any details. What were their ages and races? Where drugs found in their systems? Did they have anything to do with the Clintons?
Knew someone who served on that ship.
Told someone she was going to throw herself off the flight deck. Thankfully received the help she needed.
Is Captain Bligh in command of that ship?
there are repercussions for seeking help though. if deemed unstable it could mean removal from your post. it could be career ending.
Three suicides in a week???
Color me suspicious but I think it needs some very serious looking into.
I find that far too coincidental.
When I was on active duty in the Air Force, stationed in New Mexico at Holloman AFB, in the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing, six airmen committed suicide in a one year period.
The Wing Commander of the base, a one star general, was fired for failure to uphold morale and safety of the troops.
Of course, the suicides weren't his fault personally but he was responsible for the overall morale of the troops under his command and his superiors saw the suicides as a failure in that area.
It's not that unusual to have troops kill themselves. The law of averages would account for some suicides just by the numbers. A Navy aircraft carrier is a big ship. Lots of sailors on board. Out to sea for extended periods of time. They are usually young, miss their families and or girlfriends and can't see any other way out.
When something like this happens, my first thought is that they were homosexuals. Homosexuals kill themselves at very high rates compared to the normal portion of the population.
