Here in Tulsa, our Catholic High School was forced into the highest division, even though enrollment doesn't put them there. The issue was the girls volleyball team and boys soccer teams were unbeatable.

Set the rules and let them play

IIRC in 1971 he introduced the Wishbone, and that’s what led to their success in the 70s.

True. But a lot of people think the game vs USC caused Bryant to see the light. Bryant was already recruiting blacks before that game. But that game sure made it easier for Bryant to sign and play black players.

Bryant knew what he was doing, he had begged the Bama Administration to allow black players for years.

The Bear was no racist.

Agree.

Here’s a nice article on the subject that came out just today.

Yep, and I think Bear used the wishbone for the first time against USC the next year, and they’d managed to keep it a secret. That was still a few years before so many games were on TV, and the rematch in LA was not televised.

I and several others were in an apartment in Tuscaloosa when the game started and Bama lined up in the Wishbone formation, everybody went nuts including the radio announcer. Bama won that one 17-10, and we still had only two black players as I recall.

Here’s a write-up about a documentary that tells the story, but I think the racial angle has been overemphasized as Bama had already recruited its first black players before that game in Birmingham with USC.

Here in S.E. Michigan, there are some "newer" schools in the suburbs that look like college campuses and their football fields are small stadiums.

Several years ago when I played in a senior baseball league, we played a game at Lake Orion high school. The school was huge and the field was all artificial turf.........it was beautiful.

Have a friend whose brother was the head coach at De La Salle Collegiate in Warren, MI. They were a Div. 2 powerhouse. But just like many of the catholic schools, they recruit for their athletic programs, offering breaks in tuition costs.

Its got nothing to do with money
...........
Agree.
.......
The same reason “poor” schools fail at football, is the same reason they fail at academics.
........
A lot of the performance of football teams is a function of their coaching. A great coach can do wonders for a team.

Getting rid of Affirmative Action and only allowing truly qualified students admittance would solve a lot of the problem. If that happened, a lot of the super athletes would be spread out to less prestigious schools. The way it is now, some of these sports teams should actually be professional teams with no connection whatsoever to the schools. Give the athletes salaries instead of scholarships, and have them use that income to pay for classes if they’re so inclined.

My old H.S was a perennial mediocrity in football until black kids started moving into the district, which had the coaches salivating. We are in section 6 in Western New York, a small school located in a first-ring suburb of Buffalo that usually played against small rural schools like Eden and Silver Creek.
The last 3 years they were section champions and got to play in the Carrier Dome.

What about schools like Columbia who have a very small number of extremely bright students who also love to play football. Perhaps they could get an exam contest against the players from Michigan to decide the game and play for fun.

NOT!

“Here in Tulsa, our Catholic High School was forced into the highest division, even though enrollment doesn’t put them there. The issue was the girls volleyball team and boys soccer teams were unbeatable.

One issue here in Georgia is that the large private schools (some, but not all, of them with religious affiliations) “recruit” from a larger geographic area than public schools. So, they are routinely placed in higher-level divisions than their enrollments would otherwise dictate. Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) is the classic example.

It is time to implement “Socialist Football”... at game’s end all points scored by both teams are surrendered to the “collective” and then “fairly redistributed”... as to not hurt anyone’s feelings... and every game ends in a tie. #FootballJustice!

Wins and losses should not be determined by the number of points scored. Good Social Justice warriors would assign wins on the basis of diversity, sincerity in social justice causes, and poverty level of the schools that play each other. Also bonus points should be given for number of transgendered players and cheerleaders associated with each team.

Isn’t that the PC wave of the future?

It is private schools like Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. They legally recruit from all over the country. And rich parents send their football studs to Vegas to play for them.

They are the ones that need to be disbanded.

In high school, a team’s fortunes can change remarkably in one year.

Sometimes a school does have some choice in what class to compete in. I’m not sure about Iowa.

It looks like Iowa gets very rural one county away from Des Moines. Dropping down a class might not be practical. Not winning a state championship isn’t the end of the world.

Fix the problem with other people money. OPM solves all social ills.

Stupid reasoning and analysis. Look at failure breeds failure.
