Spain's Supreme Court has ruled that the remains of dictator Francisco Franco should be exhumed.
It backed the Socialist government's plan to move the remains from a state mausoleum to a less controversial site.
An appeal by Franco's family against the exhumation and proposing an alternative site was rejected.
The issue has divided opinion in Spain, which remains haunted by the Franco era. He won the 1930s civil war and went on to rule Spain until 1975.

Chevy Chase should be involved.
Why are they ‘haunted’ by his era?
Dang it you beat me by 14 seconds...that and I posted mine on the wrong thread ...

The international left has never forgiven Franco for defeating the Bolsheviks in Spain... the first significant foreign-policy defeat for the Soviet Union.
Franco is buried at Valley of the Fallen, which is an enormous, cross shaped church, carved into the side of a mountain near Madrid.
When I was there, I noticed the the big toes of the statues surrounding the Cross on top of the mountain, were considerably larger than my six foot tall self. (Plus, one feels like an ant going through those enormous church doors.
Its a very impressive place.
Spain under Franco was relatively stable, but most elections were fixed, the Guardia Civil ruled with an iron hand, censorship was prevalent and the economy was stagnant.
Fascist symbols were on every highway and “historic markers” described every Franco movement during the Civil War. Much of the country was gray and depressing.
I very highly recommend it.
Damn, I was one good looking dictator!
Those Spanish socialists still love to dig up corpses.
Even seen from the distant highway, its a very impressive sight.
The international left has never forgiven Franco for defeating the Bolsheviks in Spain...
So true.
