Two Los Angeles County women believed to be part of a national fraud ring were arrested on suspicion of posing as employees from the Internal Revenue Service in a phone scam that may have bilked several victims out of $900,000, the Fontana Police Department said Friday.

A Fontana man received a call on Sept. 4, 2019, from a person who identified themself as an IRS employee and threatened to arrest the victim if he didn’t pay the caller $2,200 in Target gift cards, police said. The victim complied and provided the gift cards to the caller.

He later reported the incident to Fontana police, and detectives traced the gift cards to a Target store in the Los Angeles area, where they found surveillance footage of a woman redeeming them, according to the department.

Who is really stupid enough to believe the IRS takes Target gift cards as payment?

I have gotten to the point of not answering calls from numbers I don’t recognize. If it is important, they’ll leave a message.

Reason #216 to not answer the phone unless you know who’s calling.

Exactly how I operate. 100%

You know, I’m sorry, I know people can be stupid, but how can a person be SO stupid as to think the IRS takes payment in Target gift cards? I mean, come on!

I’m surprised they weren’t Indians (from India, that is).

to not answer the phone unless you know who’s calling.

I thought I knew the callee, when it was my number. I figured I would be answering to speak to myself, but no... it was a scammer.

Point being, even knowing the number is insufficient.

The ONLY way to know who's calling is to call someone, and then request that they call you back. If the caller ID matches that prearranged callee, you have a 99.99% chance of knowing who's calling.

I’ve had that happen to me in the last couple of weeks: getting a call from my own number! Luckily, I figured it was yet another scam so I didn’t answer it. I sure hope I didn’t have a life-threatening emergency when I called myself. 🤣

“My point is the federal government has no interest in protecting the citizens of this country.”

This is not the fault of the federal government.

The real problem is not just the criminals, but that people still fall for such obvious scams.

What do you want, a federal gov employee to sit next to each person to protect them from making stupid decisions?

With millions of foreign nationals in southern CA, and millions of illegals, it’s become America’s Nigeria.

What a nasty overcrowded foul place it became.

These scams generally work on elderly; possible dementia involved I think. That makes it very sad to me. The elderly with dementia probably still have enough thought process to fear the IRS, jail but not enough to understand it is a scam.

Yea, I’ve read where cashiers have stopped people from buying gift cards when they thought the buyer might be the victim of a scam.

“What do you want, a federal gov employee to sit next to each person to protect them from making stupid decisions?”

That was dumb. How about the federal government upholding the law that says such telecommunications scams are illegal.

The call that really frosts me is when they claim that your Social Security is being taken away. How many elderly folks have been scared to death that this is legit? There has to be a way to stop these people.
