Anyone having problems with Firefox

My Firefox froze up and won't shut down on my computer. This has been going on for the past hour and a half.

Updating from Windows 98 to 98SE should solve that problem.

It simply would not turn off, not even show any indication that it was trying to close. I finally just held the on/off button until it finally closed.

Had the same thing happen, restarted in safe mode and ran virus scans, nothing found. Restarted normally, ran Windows Update, installed important updates.

Once an exploit is published, meaning Microsoft has a patch available, dark web types rush to take advantage. Always good to stay on top of updates.

Firefox history had numerous entries stating attack attempt trying to obtain bank information. Didn't have the problem again after the Microsoft update was installed.

File this under For What It's Worth.

Use control panel to remove Firefox. Download a new version and install. Bet that solves your problem.

Removed Firefox and tried to install new version but it would not install...……..

Start Firefox in safe mode...

I appreciate the advice but I have no idea on how to do that...

To start Firefox in safe mode, first make sure all FF windows are closed, then hold the shift key down while you start FF, then click the safe mode button in the popup.

Starting FF in safe mode has nothing to do with starting a Windows computer in safe mode.

Firefox can be downloaded here:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release

To show the Firefox menu, you may have to right click the top of the FF window and click "Menu Bar."

Reboot your computer and try again. If that fails, describe what messages appear when the installation fails.

You have the answer.
I have Linux Mint 17 and I never update.
Mine has worked perfectly for years without ever updating.
I never have a problem and am able to do anything I want.
If it ever starts to act up I’ll simply download the latest version of Linux and wipe my old mint 17 from the computer.
Bottom line = Don’t update!

Win10?
Had a similar problem when I fired up the laptop to connect it to the TV ...ended up having to wait for some Win updates to process even though there was no indication they were going on.

Yeah Mozilla really screwed the genius Brendan Eich.

So yes they are to be hated.

I will use their stuff for free if I have to.

That’s one way God provides in this world.

He makes evil serve His people.

If you run on Linux, open a terminal window, type in "su -" then the root password when prompted.

Then type "ps -ef | grep firefox" then enter.
Note the PID on the left then type "kill [PID #]

Firefox will be gone.

If you run Windows...Task manager is your only option I think.

Thank you for your response........Unfortunately I do not have Linux.

With that being said, I finally had to uninstall Firefox but kept getting the prompt that it was still running even tho I had on several tries used task manager to delete it.

I finally resorted to using System Restore to a prior date and that really screwed up my computer. Got error messages after the restore saying there were problems, to restart computer but when I did, it never fully restarted and would shut down.

Finally got another screen that took me to the "restore system" again and that gave me the option to reverse what I had just done.

FWIW, this was taking me hours.......

Anyway, what I had unrestored was restored to the original state of last night.

I was finally able to reinstall Firefox but lost all of my bookmarked websites due to my not saving them somewhere............

So the newer version of Firefox is now installed but it is totally unrecognizable and I have to continue to find and bookmark all the sites that were deleted...........

Anyway, it's back to normal but now another pain in the ass that I have to learn how to manage..............

I have to admit, I suffered extreme anxiety over the loss of the use of my computer since I am on it all day long. It wasn't the loss of the computer but how the hell am I going to fix it.

That's a bad sign that we are becoming addicted to technology..........

Usually, I restate, usually, Firefox makes a book mark backup in the Firefox directory under your Username directory when you exit the program.

You should do a system-wide search for files that end in ".json". The file will be called "bookmarks.json" and sometimes "bookmarks.html". A search for files named "bookmarks" might help. If you find it/them, you can import that file by going to the menu bar to find Bookmarks>>Show all bookmarks>>Import and Backup tab.

As for your extensions...you'll have to do those all over again. Painful but there's no option at this point.

However, in the future, DO download a program called MozBackup. Install it and run it once per week at the worst. It will backup your entire profile...bookmarks, extensions, everything...and can restore it easily when you hit a situation such as you are seeing now.

Good luck.

Hot Tabasco ,,,,, I have to continue to find and bookmark all the sites that were deleted...........

For the bookmarks I copy and paste them into a E-MAIL draft to myself. They'll stay with you no matter what computer you're on...
