Weeks shy of his 95th birthday, former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday he doesnt believe he could have managed the most powerful office in the world at 80 years old.
Carter, who earlier this year became the longest lived chief executive in American history, didnt tie his comments to any of his fellow Democrats running for president, but two leading 2020 candidates, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, would turn 80 during their terms if elected.
Biden is 76. Sanders is 78.
I hope theres an age limit, Carter said with a laugh as he answered audience questions at his annual report at the Carter Center in Atlanta. If I were just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I dont believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president.
Carters remarks came in response to a jovial inquiry about whether he had considered running in 2020 since hes still constitutionally allowed another term. The 39th president left office in 1981 at the age of 56 after losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan, who served two terms and left office as the oldest sitting president in history, at 77.
Either Biden or Sanders would be older upon their inauguration than Reagan was on his final day in the Oval Office. At 73, President Donald Trump is a record-setter, as well. He eclipsed Reagans mark as the oldest newly elected president in history and would become the oldest president to be reelected, as well.

You are so very right.
Jimmy youd fail at any age.
I think he was 53 when he became president. Couldnt handle it at that age either.
You stole my thunder........;)
His domestic policy was designed to cripple American energy production.
He made micro management decisions which cost American lives during the Iranian hostage crisis and indeed had he continued backing the Shah Iran would never have become a potential nuclear threat or an enemy.
Screw Carter, and everyone who defends him.
Exactly. My thought was he never could handle it at any age. His presidency was a long four years.
“His domestic policy was designed to cripple American energy production.”
What specific policies were those?
“He made micro management decisions which cost American lives during the Iranian hostage crisis”
The JCS built a great plan for that rescue. It would have been legendary had it succeeded. But the US Air Force C-130 pilots screwed it up.
Carter only approved the plan.
And if you’re saying Screw Me, I say Screw You.
When you’re grown up you’ll learn debate.
I hate this POS with the white-hot intensity of a thousand Suns.
Shove off, already!
And we'd still have the Panama Canal if it had been under Trump's watch. Carter gave away something that belonged to us and wasn't his to give away.
Joe Biden couldn’t handle it at 40.
“And we’d still have the Panama Canal if it had been under Trump’s watch.”
So true. And another glaring example of a difference between Trump and Carter.
That’s two.
And I think Carter was the first to adopt the “one China” policy.
A huge error.
In foreign policy, Carter projected weakness, seemingly on purpose. Carter put in big cuts in defense. Trump has increased defense. It was that very obvious weakness that resulted in the embassy in Iran being taken hostage - which is why I’m astounded by people here saying Trump should signal we won’t do anything in response to anything Iran does. He stopped the Ford administration’s plan to deploy intermediate range ballistic missiles in Europe to counter the Soviet Union’s deployment of such missiles aimed at Western Europe. Reagan once again went forward with the plan, over huge protests by European leftists and “peace movement” types. In response the Soviets signed a treaty removing their own missiles in exchange for Reagan removing our missiles - known as the “zero zero” option. It was a stunning illustration of Reagan’s theme of “Peace through strength”. Carter would never have had the strength to go through with it in a million years.
Domestically Carter signed the bill to put the Alaskan ANWAR off limits to oil drilling, which has remained off limits ever since. He put in the idiotic 55 mph speed limit. He refused to deregulate oil (not only prices but other things the government was controlling) resulting in those preposterous gas lines and west coast oil shortages. To his credit he did deregulate other things. And of course he was resolutely opposed to a tax cut.
How well I remember those long 4 years......never again I pray......
We know he would not have, he said something to that effect at the time.

Donald Trump interview 1980. Watch at 1:15. (He looks so much like Barron, even though PDJT is 34)
“Carter put in big cuts in defense.”
The US military was far larger under Carter. Ships. Tanks. Fighters. Bombers. Nukes.
Every element of of military power was higher under Carter. Both when he entered office, and when he left.
And it was Nixon who established the 55 mph speed limit.
GA Jimmuh couldn’t handle it to well at 52 either.
Yes the military has substantially shrunk in size since the collapse of the Soviet Union. What does that have to do with my point? Trump has increased defense. You are somehow trying to arrive at the idea that Carter = Trump. Give it up.
What you said. Was thinking the same thing.
