Weeks shy of his 95th birthday, former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday he doesnt believe he could have managed the most powerful office in the world at 80 years old.
Carter, who earlier this year became the longest lived chief executive in American history, didnt tie his comments to any of his fellow Democrats running for president, but two leading 2020 candidates, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, would turn 80 during their terms if elected.
Biden is 76. Sanders is 78.
I hope theres an age limit, Carter said with a laugh as he answered audience questions at his annual report at the Carter Center in Atlanta. If I were just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I dont believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president.
Carters remarks came in response to a jovial inquiry about whether he had considered running in 2020 since hes still constitutionally allowed another term. The 39th president left office in 1981 at the age of 56 after losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan, who served two terms and left office as the oldest sitting president in history, at 77.
Either Biden or Sanders would be older upon their inauguration than Reagan was on his final day in the Oval Office. At 73, President Donald Trump is a record-setter, as well. He eclipsed Reagans mark as the oldest newly elected president in history and would become the oldest president to be reelected, as well.

How did his domestic policy differ? Trump is strongly pro-American and pro-business. He ignited an energy revolution the likes of which we have never seen and turned the US into a net exporter of energy. Next up he is going to open ANWR for drilling and stop CA from setting its own mileage rules. He has reduced regulations by the semi truck load.
Carter cowered under OPEC, set the national speed limit at 55 mph, talked about limits, wore sweaters in the oval office to set the tone, and created miles long gasoline lines.
Seriously You really think there’s any similarity at all? I’m guessing you must have been about 4 to 8 years old when Jimmy was pres.
Jimmy Carter couldnt handle it when he was in his 50s.
“I dont think that PDJT would have let the Iranian debacle happen.”
Trump is clearly an America First POTUS and a non-interventionist.
Carter was a non-interventionist.
I contend Trump would have allowed the crazies to take over Iran.
Obama couldn’t do it at half that age.
Really?
(1) Gas lines;
(2) Allowed a stable Iran to lose control to Islamist terrorists who have been wreaking havoc ever since;
(3) Totally ineffective in addressing the Iran hostage situation;
(4) 20% interest rates.
I'm sure there are more.
I think Odumbo did more lasting damage than Carter did, but the four years of Carter were the most miserable of any four years during my sixty years.
Clearly there was no age at which Jimmy Carter could manage the presidency.
“Im guessing you must have been about 4 to 8 years old when Jimmy was pres.”
I hated him for decades.
But the reality is this: Nixon instituted the 55 mph speed limit in 1974. Carter was elected in 1976.
Your assertion is about tone and leadership, not about policy.
If I was so young...I’m guessing you were not even born yet.

What Jimmy Carter claimed to be was a nuclear enginer in the Navy, not a physicist. so heres my answer to your corrected question, Milt.
NO!!!
Not even close.
Jimmy Carter served on diesel powered submarines and eventually became a student of the Navys six-month Nuclear Power School, a book-based course on the operation of nuclear reactors. While there he was released from the Navy due to hardship (death of his father).
Now compare that to my path through the nuclear submarine Navy. After commissioning I became a student of the Navys six-month Nuclear Power School. But I did not get releas...(more)
Actually he had a bit more Nuclear experience than you indicate and yes he served on Submarines. ...

No, Jimmy Carter is unqualified to design any part of a reactor, and is not a nuclear engineer.
Nuclear engineering is a real baccalaureate program. Carter was an early entrant into the nuclear submarine program, after beginning his career on diesel-electric submarines. Carter started at Georgia Tech, and did eventually get go to the Naval Academy. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree, but not in engineering, and certainly not nuclear engineering, a degree still not offered by the US Naval Academy.
He trained to oversee the operation of nuclear reactors. This is a stringent qualification. Many fail. However, it is not meant to support the design of any part of a reactor or engineering system. This curriculum is to train a person to safely operate a nuclear reactor, even under casualties. The decisions are relatively rote. Critical thinking and analysis are frowned upon.
Engineers design. They think. Good ones are artistic. None of this comes from being a reactor operator, but some reactor operators (enlisted and the in charge officers) are creative, just like many other non-creative jobs.
Jimmy Carter is completely unqualified to design any part of a reactor, and is not a nuclear engineer.
I seriously doubt that PDJT would allow the takeover of a U.S. Embassy.
“(1) Gas lines;”
The alternative was war and the building of an all new supply chain.
“(2) Allowed a stable Iran to lose control to Islamist terrorists who have been wreaking havoc ever since; “
Would you have recommended putting US Troops in Iran to fix it? Would you like to propose an alternative course?
“(3) Totally ineffective in addressing the Iran hostage situation; “
Carter gave the order. The US Air Force screwed that up with the collision in the desert. I, personally, took the secure satellite call at Navcams Westpac and patched them through to the Crystal Palace. No shit.
“(4) 20% interest rates.”
Independent Fed. Carter has nothing to do with that. I’d like to hear your, or any argument otherwise.
“I’m sure there are more. “
Let’s hear ‘em.
I’m 63 too. Been on sick leave. Got a pacemaker put in. Work at a local hospital here in southern NJ. I’m that guy with the floor buffer. When you’re trying to sleep in your room I’m that guy with the floor buffer. Just kidding actually we don’t buff the floors when patients are in the room.
“And I voted for him. “
I didn’t. I voted for Ford.
The spread of extremist Islam is independent of any thing Carter did, or didn’t do.
It’s been going on for 1,300 years.
To stop it you’d have to kill each and every one of them.
Trump is a machine. I’m nearly 60 and get burned out when my weeks get over 60 hours. He does at least 60 hours every three days lol.
Well, for starters he’s very pro Arab and anti Jew/Israel. Even more so now than then
Energy policy
Adding regulations
Adding more federal bureaucracy (useless Dept of Energy)
Very indecisive, top down management
Mariel boat lift - lot of crime victims in Florida after he allowed that fiasco
I truly believe that Trump would have not been so wishy washy as was he when the Iranians invaded our embassy.
“You didnt manage the Presidency at whatever your age was in 1976.”
Gerald Ford was POTUS in 1976.
Both Ford and Carter are proof Moderates can’t run a country.
Helping Islam in the manner Carter did can’t really be considered an independent action to its spread.
