At least 22 people injured after three-story deck collapse in New Jersey

Three levels of decking attached to a residential building collapsed on top of each other at the Jersey Shore Saturday, injuring at least 22 people, including some children.

The collapse in Wildwood happened at around 6 p.m. during the annual New Jersey Firemen's Convention, which attracts thousands of current and former firefighters to the resort town.

Cape May Regional Health System said 21 people were taken there, at least three of them children. Eleven patients had been released by 10 p.m., including all the children who were admitted, hospital spokeswoman Susan Staeger told The Associated Press. AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City said at least one additional person was taken there.

Last year, I decided to move to a condo as I enter next phase of my life.

We looked at a lot of condo developments and 9 times out of 10, the decks were the reason we kept moving on. Even in so-called upscale developments, the decks seem to be an afterthought, with all the aesthetic focus placed on the front of the buildings.

In many cases, these decks were just wood planks hanging off the side of the building, so shoddy that I wouldn't feel comfortable sitting on even by myself. Now I'm a big deck person, when the weather is nice, I prefer to spend almost all my time on the deck with my reading, my laptop and taking in the fresh air. So the quality of the deck was always a big priority for me.

Finally I found a development with solid concrete podium construction that met all my other requirements. But it was a long search.

Right, because legal Americans never do crappy work? You can't make the illegals the bogeyman for every shoddy bit of work or bad thing that happens.(there are enough real things)

There’s a reason it’s called Wild-wood.

At least there were a lot of first responders around to help.

I agree with this. I recently had people work on my property, and the work they did was both horrible and unsafe - and the crew were young white Americans with no pride in their work. I made a poor decision hiring them, and I had to pay to have everything redone. Now I’m trying to get money back. It was an absolute disaster, and I’m not home enough to have followed what was going on in detail. Their work actually had to be condemned. Literally.

What are the odds the contractor that built the deck used illegal labor

Looks more like union work to me.

I know this area well and lag bolts are, by law, supposed to be installed for just this reason. There have been quite a few deck collapses in these “shore” towns because too many people stand outside on them during parties.

My guess is it was a combination of lousy construction and a deck loaded with too many people, good construction or not.

I have a healthy conscious reticence all my life about joining crowds.

Reminds me of a verse from one of Kipling's poems.

The secret hid

Under Cheops pyramid

Is that the contractor did

Cheops out of several millions.

I’m sure they’re overloading those decks. Codes can’t protect us from everything in life, that’s for sure.
Here, a lag in every stud is required.

One would think fire fighters would never have let their kids onto such a crowded deck.

All of NJ is corrupt as hell right down to the dog catcher and building inspector. Plus these houses are 110 yr old, and the building trade there is both corrupt AND inept. One TV station did an HCAC sting; disconnected one wire - asked 10 repair Co’s to suggest fixes. All 10 lied and claimed large repairs to replacement HVAC. In NJ, 10 of 10 lie

Not just NJ but TX, too. We had 4 HVAC guys out and 3 wrote up costly repairs and replacements of the entire unit. The last guy added some coolant and it worked just fine for years.

Rotting was at bottom, the strange thing about this is nothing happened to the back of the building. No siding ripped off,no holes. We have a condo 2nd floor and I’m going to check everything when I go down.We do roof top on New Years Eve and also have about 8 people on front deck.We have about 30 family members over,it’s fun.We know the builder but I still want to check
