Joe Bidens suggestion that parents leave a record player on to teach their babies better vocabulary was a head-scratching (needle-scratching?) moment in Thursdays debate.
But it was hardly the first time the 76-year-old Biden has busted out a vintage reference that reveals his age and leaves some in the audience in the dark.
Famous for his off-the-cuff storytelling, the former vice president regularly goes deep in the vault to pull out characters and events known primarily to a people of a certain age. Ever heard of Henry Carr? How about a Jerry can? [ ]
Play the radio, make sure the television excuse me, make sure you have the record player on at night, the the make sure that kids hear words. This was part of Bidens answer to a question about inequality in schools and what Americans can do to repair the legacy of slavery. He spoke about spending more money on the countrys poorest schools, giving teachers a raise and having social workers help parents. [ ]
All of a sudden, Along Came Jones, as that old song goes. Along came Trump, Biden told a group of Democrats in Las Vegas in July. [ ]
Along Came Jones, was a 45 a single on the long-defunct ATCO label that barely charted after its release in 1959, when Biden was a sophomore in high school. He used it as a segue to the defining moment for voters today, the election of President Donald Trump.

I wonder if Biden lurks on FR...I made this post on the 10th of this month:
"The Trump-Effect evolving....they thought they had a lock on the tactics and nobody would ever fight back....(To an old song tune by the Coasters) Along came Trump...
I flopped down in my easy chair and turned on channel 2 A bad gunslinger called Salty Sam was a-chasin poor sweet Sue
He trapped her in the old sawmill and said with an evil laugh
If you dont give me the deed to your ranch, Ill saw you all in half
And then he grabbed her (And then?) He tied her up (And then?) He turned on the buzz saw (And then? And then?)
Ack-ack And then along came Trump Tall, thin Trump Slow-walkin Trump Slow-talkin Trump Along came lonely, lanky Trump Yep - when #NeverTrumper types commit a felony, its just a college prank...if any conservative does it, its throw away the key.... Post Reply | Private Reply | To 1 | View R
I remember phones that didn’t even have a dial yet... lol
“Off the cuff story telling.” That’s a funny phrase to describe dementia.
Eight-track still going stronger however.
Just this morning, I read Joe spoke to a small group of schoolkids, and made up a story about him fighting a group with switchblades. The leader of that group was Corn Pops.
I am not making this up. Anyway, Joe likes to weave tales.
“NATO spec Jerry cans are still about the best gas cans you can buy.”
This.
Of course, if you want to spill gasoline all over your half-track and yourself, get one of the flimsy red plastic containers with the useless spout. I did that trick just yesterday.
I also hear my car is capable of receiving AM/FM stations. If any still exist. Now I grew up with the "Big 68" in Boston - WRKO - when they played Top 40 radio on the AM band. I used to listen to Casey Kasem run down the Top 40 every Sunday. Good memories of a much more innocent time. In fact this morning, I just heard "Beach Baby" by First Class. That jogged some memories.
For context, watch the 1945 movie by the same name starring Gary Cooper. It contains very funny vignettes. Good movie.
Well, thats a relief. I was distraught.
“We used to have a blast playing 45’s at 16 or 78 RPMs.”
I believe the 16 RPM were basically for Berlitz “How to learn a language” Record set.
and, don’t forget to ‘pull the chain’...
Also had 45rpm record players for the car, before 8trk. Back in 1953 my third grade teacher had a 78RPM record player, factory installed in her 53 Desoto!
That's nothing. There are people who believe "the day the music died" was when Mozart passed away on Dec 5, 1791.
The smart phone, memory sticks, digital services have replaced the CD player.
At least he did mention the Constitution; the only one out of the clown car to do so.
Yes, but out out of “the 76-year-old Biden” as they wrote, hence age-ism.
I recall hearing that once CDs were phased out, their prices would drop to the level of vinyl records; back then, most new record albums were around $9 ($20 in 2019 dollars) while a new CD was over $15 (almost $34 in 2019 dollars). The vinyl went away, but the CDs stayed around the $15 level (even reissues of old albums) until the mid-2000s when I started seeing them for $7.99, and of late I’ve seen them as low as $4 (which would be $1.83 back in 1987).
I still use CDs (my vinyl-playing hi-fi was stolen long ago):
1. MP3s are low-to-mid-fi. They are never hi-fi. An audiophile is unlikely to be content with them. (Some purists are not even content with an SACD or DVD-Audio, but insist on vinyl.) Very few downloads I have seen are available as WAV or FLAC.
2. One does not own a download. It is in effect a lease or rental. Rights to it can be revoked; one cannot necessarily bequeath it to an heir. If one wants to OWN the music, one needs to buy the HARD copy!
I am not giving up my tangible, superior music sources.
They exist. I listen to certain college stations. They play indie music I would never otherwise discover, some of which has influenced me as both an audiophile and a composer.
