Most elementary school kids don't have their college plans firmed up, but the University of Tennessee super-fan who was bullied for his homemade T-shirt can mark that off of his list. "In recognition of the fourth-grader's Volunteer spirit, the university has extended an offer of honorary admission for him to join the Class of 2032," the school said in a statement. "In addition, he has been awarded a four-year scholarship covering his tuition and fees beginning fall 2028 should he decide to attend UT and meet admission requirements."

UTK is pretty conservative as universities go. At the orientation, they stressed that ALL opinions, even unpopular ones, were not to be prohibited.

“Meanwhile my daughter with a 4.0 HS GPA and a 32 on the ACT still has a $11,000 tuition and fees per yer at UTK.”

That’s your fault. There should’ve been more cash in that unmarked envelope you passed to the admissions head.

Just think...you’d only spend 14 days in jail...

She got admitted by herself. If I had envelopes of cash, the tuition wouldn’t bother me.

I’m familiar with the feeling. We put both of our kids thru the first 4 years (state schools)...and they repaid us with great grades and college accomplishments. Both went on with their education. We helped a little but they both took on the bulk of the graduate costs on their own. One has paid off hers...the other is almost there. You’re proud of your kid for her accomplishments, as are we of ours. That’s something nobody can ever take from them.

That was my thought, too.

And...a lot can happen from now until 2032.

In my view, all the shows of empathy, compassion, charity and openness are being way WAY overdone. Good that this kid found some understanding, but enough’s enough. Don’t draw too much attention to the material things this boy lacked. Don’t encourage him to see the short term benefit of being a victim. “Poor, poor, pitiful me!”

All this being public knowledge is setting him up to make other kids jealous. It will be a “Teacher’s Pet” syndrome, unless someone says, let’s tap the brakes on this tsunami of supporting and boosting. Let’s go back to normal interactions.

How can you be unhappy about something good that happens to a young kid? The child took the initiative to do something positive and a lot of people think that is good.

What about the tens of thousands of kids who get free tuition for doing nothing?

Be fair - admission to the class of 2032 will occur in the fall of 2027 - eight, not thirteen, years from now.

But I do agree with the point that this is an Internet phenomenon. A kind of GoFundMe reaction . . .

The same people who are mad about this kid getting a scholarship are the same people who get all excited about giving a scholarship to a kid who can’t read, but can run a 4.3 40.
