Much to the delight of its rival up north, the pretentious meter was pegged in the middle of August when Ohio State confirmed that it had filed the paperwork seeking a trademark on the word The as it pertains to items being marketed with the universitys name. Buckeye Nation, of course, takes great pride in letting everyone know that they are THE Ohio State University at nearly every turn, and the university is simply looking to protect that brand of self-identification.
For now, though, that initial application made to the United States Patent & Trademark Office has been denied

I don’t get it. What’s the big deal about calling Ohio State THE Ohio State???
In college, I knew a grad student who did her undergrad at The Ohio State University. Very arrogant. She was an oboe player, and of course playing oboe bursts a lot of capillaries in the brain, so...
So stupid. What a waste of taxpayer money. What are they hoping to accomplish with this? Do they think they’re going to stop, say, Michigan State, Arizona State etc from calling themselves THE Michigan State University, etc.? And if so, why?? Total exercise in idiocy.
I HATE when NFL players introduce themselves with “THE Ohio State...” like it means a damn thing. Ohio St. has only won two national championships in the past 48 years, after winning 5 under Woody Hayes alone.
I have a Nephew who is a lawyer for the Patent Dept. I wonder if he had anything to do with it.
“I dont get it. Whats the big deal about calling Ohio State THE Ohio State???”
I think the article answered your question. It’s pretentious. IMO it’s dumb and arrogant. Aside from football, what are they known for?
I want our great president to trademark THE President of the United States. Its only right! /s
I could see Troy University being “The Real Men Of Troy”.
Are they talking about An Ohio State University?
“I dont get it. Whats the big deal about calling Ohio State THE Ohio State???”
Slippery slope thing. :) Next thing we know Ohio University will append their name to be “The Best Ohio University”.
Then schools will want to trademark “The Supreme”, “The Phenomenal” etc.
But what would be fun is if Univ of South Carolina went for the name “THE REAL USC”...LOL
At least with The Episcopal Church, it was because they were trying to deny the validity of other Episcopal Churches. (Which was totally depraved of them, but at least it was a motive.) But what gives here? Were people from Kent State claiming they went to “a Ohio, state University?”
How funny would it be if Oklahoma State started calling themselvees THE OSU?
You mean “THE University of Florida at Columbus”?
If “The” could be trademarked, clearly the “Bent one” would want to trademark “is”.
Oklahoma State should change their name to T. Boone Pickens University. (RIP)
Well, Dr. Evil’s dad did invent the question mark.
They have one of all the best professional flight schools in the country. IMHO, LOL
“How funny would it be if Oklahoma State started calling themselvees THE OSU?”
Oh nice, let’s bring Oregon State into the scene also.
