NEWPORT NEWS, Va. A piece of the worlds first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will serve another 25 years in the Navy.
The former Enterprise carrier (CVN 65) was decommissioned in 2017 after several years of inactivation work was completed at Newport News Shipbuilding.
Now one of the anchors from the Enterprise has been installed on another aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington.
That ship just reached the midway point of its midlife Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding.
During the overhaul process, shipbuilders inspecting the Washington found that one anchor on the carrier needed to be replaced. Enter the anchor from the Enterprise.
As the ship underwent the inactivation process at Newport News, where it was originally built, the anchors were preserved and stored.
The 32-ton starboard side anchor was built in 1957 and stayed on Enterprise throughout the ships naval service. It was refurbished and installed on the Washington.
This is not the first time an anchor from the Enterprise has seen continued life.
The port side anchor from Enterprise was installed on the USS Abraham Lincoln in 2014 as the Lincoln underwent RCOH in Newport News.
The Enterprise served the Navy for 51 years from 1961 to 2012. The name will live on with CVN-80, which will also be built by Newport News Shipbuilding.
At 32 tons, those anchors aweigh a helluva lot!
When you install used parts, doesn’t that void the warranty?
I like that!
“Here...catch!”
Who would have thought that a huge hunk of steel like an aircraft carrier anchor would need to be replaced? What are they using for metal?
I made 2 1/2 tours on the Gulf of Tonkin aboard the USS Enterprise. I was part of the airwing VF-96.
I was in the Navy we operated with her on several cruises after she was commissioned. Does that make me old? On second thought, don’t answer that.
Chinese anchors don’t last as long as the older American made anchors.
Was on the Enterprise from 1999-2000
Yes frequently...CVN cant pull into a lot of ports and will anchor in the harbor...on my deployment on Roosevelt we were never pierside during the deployment.
Oh look, its glowing an strange gold color because its radioactive....
There were a couple of fast attack boats slinking around under you.
Spent three years under #3 cat water brake, on the 03 level.
The next-to-last shot of chain for the anchor is painted yellow; the last shot is red. SOP was to run if you saw yellow and the brake wasn’t engaged.
Hahahahaha....
We lost an anchor and a large amount of chain on the JFK near...Signoella, I think. (It has been a while)
They went through a huge effort to recover it, so...it must have been worth something.
Not an answer, just a question... How many masts and how many yards of sail did she have? {:-)
No kidding!
