A gay Bronx student who said he fatally stabbed a high-school classmate after years of being bullied was sentenced to 14 years in prison Tuesday.
Bronx Judge Michael Gross sentenced Abel Cedenoafter a bench trial for the 2017 classroom killing at the now-closed Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation. Mr. Cedeno, who is 20 years old, was found guilty of manslaughter, assault and a weapons charge on July 15.
The death of Mr. Cedeno’s classmate, 15-year-oldMatthew McCree,was the first homicide in more than 20 years at a New York City public school.

WTH? That seems a little harsh. I mean it’s not like an assault rifle was used or anything.

I saw knives in WalMart the other day. Rows and rows of them. At least 4 dozen. While I was looking at what they had left of 9mm.
Fully automatic knives, too.

I’m not sure I even want to know what an urban high school has to do with wildlife conservation.
Hopefully, for the next 14 years, the “staber” will become the “stabee” (so to speak)...
When I was a teen I was in a similar situation... went to new school, got bullied relentlessly and daily, after about 8 months of it I finally responded, cracking one kid’s head open during an intense and merciless pummeling that ended only when physically restrained from continuing. Since the only parts of the encounter that surprised anyone were that it took so long to happen, and that I was that effective and delivering a beating, there were no official consequences.
Given my experience I’d probably have voted to acquit in this case.
I don’t remember all the democrat parades, memorials, candles in the wind for this murder. I guess it okay to kill fellow students as long as you do it with something other than a “glock, assault rifle with a silencer and bayonet stud on full semi-automatic that shoots 20,000 rounds per second.”
The kid who got killed had been harassing the other one for some time, and the boy had asked for help in dealing with the bully...btw, I’m not sure he was gay, but the other kid kept calling him that.
However, because of the Obama laws where problem kids cannot be disciplined or removed from class, no matter how awful their behavior, nobody intervened on his behalf.
There was an article about this problem by the father of one of the Parkland students who had been killed by a Nicholas Cruz, a kid who had been known as crazy practically since kindergarten.
The law was meant to protect black kids from the consequences of their own behavior, which would normally be some kind of a record, but has basically resulted in handing the classrooms over to the worst of the worst, who cannot be disciplined and can get away with horrible treatment of their classmates. I’m not saying the boy should have killed his tormenter, but I think he got an excessive punishment for dealing badly with something that should have been handled by the school. That is, the kid who was killed should have been removed from the classroom by the teacher before he got to bully this obviously weak boy to this point.

Lots of people feel that way. It’s why the movie Heathers was such a blockbuster success. In case of bullying retaliation, 99% of the fault is on the bully, that person is the aggressor and the one who creates and maintains the state of conflict.
You sound very pro-bullying, as if you think it’s a no big deal kind of thing rather than a dangerous trend that often does lead to serious harm and even death of their innocent targets.
OK so if you look into the background of the story, the dead kid had literally just crossed the room to attack the other one and had already hit him twice in the head, when the retaliatory fatal stab occurred.
I believe a thank-you is due to the stabber, who defended society from a violent and dangerous animal, when the law systematically refused to do so.
