10 takeaways [CFB Week 2]: Why LSU may finally be a contender again [ed]

Ten takeaways from a dramatic and occasionally mystifying Saturday in college football: 1. We welcome LSU into the 21st Century of offensive football. The most consistently underwhelming offense in the elite echelon of the sport has roared to life in 2019, just a decade or two behind most of the aerial revolution. It has been the biggest thing preventing the program from competing for a national title since 2011, when it made the BCS Championship Game. But after beating Texas 45-38, the Tigers have announced their arrival as a modern football power.

Another weekend of great college football.

The LSU v. Texas game lived up to the hype. Going into the season one of the storylines was LSUs new spread offense formulated by former New Orleans assistant coach Joe Brady. It is one thing to execute against Georgia Southern quite another to execute against Texas even if its defense is being rebuilt due to graduation. Joe Burrow threw for 470 yards and for the first time in school history three LSU receivers topped 100 yards in receiving.

Perhaps Jim Harbaugh needs to call up Coach O. Michigan managed to escape Army in OT. Despite a massive advantage in height and athleticism in the wide receiver position Michigan ran the ball 60% of its plays. Their freshman RB ran for 100 yards...on 33 carries. So much for UMs modernized offense.

Has USC found another Sam Darnold? Freshman QB Kedon Slovis threw for 377 yards and 3 TDs as he led USC past Stanford. Slovis was coached by Kurt Warner.

Pac-12 is heading towards irrelevancy again. After an over 2 hour delay due to weather, Cal beat the HuskiesGrunge Dogs in Seattle. Supposedly the 2 best teams in the Pac 12 North already have one loss.

Hot Seats are getting hotter: Tennessee lost to BYU in OT thanks to a throw a brick throw the TV defensive failure with 16 seconds remaining that enabled BYU to kick a game tying FG. To my surprise, Vol Nation showed up for the game to be bitterly disappointed seeing their Vols drop to 0-2 for the first time since 1988. Willie Taggart's FSU defense gave away another big 2nd half lead to UL-[Insert Obscure Louisiana City]. FSU managed to pull out a win in OT. Let us put Chip Kelly on the hot seat. Perhaps it is a good thing Chip Kelly is in LA where UCLA is perhaps at the bottom of sports interest in SoCal. UCLA lost to San Diego State to drop to 0-2. Kelly has a combined record of 11 - 34 starting with the 2015 NFL season.

Rutgers is once again the worst Power 5 team in the country. Rutgers only produced 125 yards of offense as Iowa pounded them 30 to 0. The longest Rutgers drive was 30 yards on their first possession. Rutgers never sniffed the red zone. Of course, the Big 10 = 14 loves to cash those checks from the households in the New York Metro area that pay their couple of bucks a year of tribute to the Big 10 = 14 for the "privilege" of having the Big 10 = 14 network.

Bad Beat of the Week: One must have been confident Clemson would cover the around 16 pt spread against TAMU as Clemson was in TAMU territory with 6 minutes remaining. Trevor Lawrence throws a pick and TAMU goes on a 16 play 91 yard drive to score a meaningless TD with 6 seconds remaining to lose by 14 and cover.

Schadenfreude Moment of the Week: ABC cutting to Matthew McConaughey after LSU scored a TD to go up two scores with under 3 minutes left:

Enjoy the Schadenfreude

WTF Moment of the Week: Is UT Athletics so petty they put the LSU band in the nose bleed seats? I have been watching college football for 35 years and I cannot remember seeing anything like that before. UT put the entire bloc of seats meant for LSU fans in the nose bleed sections. I hope there is some Cajun payback when UT makes the return visit to Baton Rogue.

I’m bad because I don’t even know who LSU replaced Coach Les Miles with. I don’t even know if they made a big name hire since then or not.

I thought West Virginia would be better.

One of their fans posts sometimes on the OSU forum, the one in Oklahoma. He said that Coach Brown had said that he had better talent at Troy.

Their coach now is some guy they must have picked out of a movie about Cajuns.

Well that part might be good, because if there is one thing Cajuns love, it’s football, high school and college.

LSU broke out of their old “invincible at home, ordinary on the road” rut — and it cost me money. I’m a believer. QB Burrow is a magician, too.

I believe that UConn (last year the worst Defense in FBS) is going to surprise this year. UConn didn't win, but only lost to Illinois by 8 behind a freshman QB. Vegas said Illinois was going to win by 20.

Also, UConn's head coach Randy Edsall mom died yesterday morning. Prayers to his family...

Kudos to the Trojans!

Early in the game, we were trailing the Stanford Indians 14-3. Our defense was like Swiss cheese and our offensive line like warm butter. It looked as though the Indians were headed for a heap big win. Gloom, cynicism and defeatism held sway among the commentators on WeAreSC, the Internet site for Trojan fans.

But we suddenly jelled, rose to the occasion, and massacred the Indians 45-20—a sweet victory, since Stanford is USC’s biggest rival after UCLA and Notre Dame.

UT put the entire bloc of seats meant for LSU fans in the nose bleed sections.

At the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, bands of the opponent used to be allowed to sit near the field. But several years ago, during a game between the USC Trojans and the Cal Commies, a member of the Commie band threw a firework onto the field in an apparent attempt to spook Traveler, the horse who serves as USC's mascot--which could have had catastrophic results in a crowded stadium had he succeeded. But Traveler was unfazed.

Thanks to that that idiot Commie, opposing bands now have to sit way up in the stands well beyond the end zone where they can cause no harm.

If this keeps up, Tennessee fans may once again be sending a moving van to the coach's house.

It's true. Many of us still go to our high school football teams games. :)

Yep, and those south and south west Louisiana high school football teams are good!

It’s not like watching the Country Day Daisies or anything like that.

“UT put the entire bloc of seats meant for LSU fans in the nose bleed sections”

Been watching for a long time as well. The first LSU football game that I remember was the Halloween 1959 Ole Miss game....I was two and a half years old.

I noticed the nose-bleed seats, too. Pretty bad visual....however, I didn’t hear anything from the commentators...musta’ been Longhorn fans.
