Where did all the babies go? Falling birth rates imperil our future

Nordic countries top many global comparisons of wellbeing and equality. Raising kids while both parents work full time is relatively easy today; economic uncertainty and unemployment, which may cause people to postpone having and raising kids, have retreated during recent boom years.

Yet, fertility has been falling in all Nordic countries. At the lower end, the total fertility rate fell to 1.43 percent in Finland in 2018, leaving scientists and politicians scratching their heads. The fertility rate measures the average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime, and a fertility rate this low has a significant impact on the country’s future demographics.

Initially, there would be less need for daycare and schools, implying a cost-saving for taxpayers. But the shrinking working-age population together with an aging population would make the welfare state unsustainable in coming decades.

Finland and other Nordic countries are not alone in this issue. Fertility typically falls with economic development, and many developed countries have even fewer babies than Finland. Falling birth rates in high-income countries have been explained, in part, by higher education and more attractive careers for women, who continue to be expected to do the majority of childcare and housework. Having to choose between jobs and motherhood, many women will keep working or try to have their first baby at an older age, when they feel secure about their careers and personal finances. For those who live for Jesus, the married life is always “worth it.” It may not always be easy, but still worth it. God ordained marriage (between male and female) and will always bless them as they honor and live for Him.

God also blesses those who remain single as they live for and honor Him.

The Key is living for God. Marriage will not work without it, and neither will the single life.

Virtally all of the U.S. population growth in the last 50 years has been due to immigrants, and the first and second generation children of immigrants. I presume that's what you wanted?

And it's not just numbers, its age ratios. Check out the ratios between under-5's and over-75's. Or the ratios of just-joined-the-labor-force vs just-qualified-for-Medicare.

I have noticed the same. I’ve also never seen a man leave his wife unless he has another woman waiting in the wings. Women, on the other hand, will leave a marriage if they’re miserable, even if there is no other man in the picture.

“As an aside, does anyone think that God is just going to let this one slide?“

God is probably saving an extra-special consequence for that.

Abortion was touted as the solution to "The Coming Population Explosion." Americans got on board. 1.5 million children murdered every year.

Then comes a labor shortage so, what do we do? Bring in equivalent numbers of the world's unwashed and unwanted to bridge the labor gap.

By listening to liberals, we merely swapped American children for America's enemies.

Brilliant. Just brilliant. /s

"Women today are manipulative whores"

People who stereotype/generalize like that tell me more about themselves than about "women"as a class.

“People who stereotype/generalize like that tell me more about themselves than about “women”as a class. “

I think people should keep in mind there is a difference between a trend and an absolute rule. Nothing that’s being said here applies to “all”. Much of it does apply to “many” and is useful for evaluating a trend and understanding the likelihood of what one is to encounter, but by itself is not useful for evaluating a particular individual.

People who say "Women today are manipulative whores, expose themselves to the vehement suspicion that they are saying "Women today are manipulative whores."

It's not over-subtle.

I thought it was obvious.

We aren’t going to agree, and frankly, if you’re going to have this kind of reaction to every discussion of the matter, when it’s obvious that a trend is what is being discussed, you’re going to have a hard time.

If he had said "Some women" or "All too many women," it would have preemptively prevented the entire objection.

He said "Women." Full stop. And you can't fault a person for responding to what was actually said.
