Where did all the babies go? Falling birth rates imperil our future

Nordic countries top many global comparisons of wellbeing and equality. Raising kids while both parents work full time is relatively easy today; economic uncertainty and unemployment, which may cause people to postpone having and raising kids, have retreated during recent boom years.

Yet, fertility has been falling in all Nordic countries. At the lower end, the total fertility rate fell to 1.43 percent in Finland in 2018, leaving scientists and politicians scratching their heads. The fertility rate measures the average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime, and a fertility rate this low has a significant impact on the country’s future demographics.

Initially, there would be less need for daycare and schools, implying a cost-saving for taxpayers. But the shrinking working-age population together with an aging population would make the welfare state unsustainable in coming decades.

Finland and other Nordic countries are not alone in this issue. Fertility typically falls with economic development, and many developed countries have even fewer babies than Finland. Falling birth rates in high-income countries have been explained, in part, by higher education and more attractive careers for women, who continue to be expected to do the majority of childcare and housework. Having to choose between jobs and motherhood, many women will keep working or try to have their first baby at an older age, when they feel secure about their careers and personal finances. Mark Steyn discussed this at length in “America Alone” 13 years ago. He believed that nihilism and hedonism that arose out of the two 20th Century World Wars led people to have fewer babies. I always thought he was onto something there. Our material wealth, our seeking of pleasure outside of progeny, our increased leisure time, and our self-centeredness tends to put people off from being parents.

I say its the men who don't want attachments

Can't blame them.

Women are constantly telling men they ain't worth s--t and they need to discover their "feminine" side and get rid of their man caves.

So no wonder men today turn to Internet porn or Real Dolls.

Historically, 10% of women hit menopause childless. In the U.S. and much of Europe, it is currently 20%. Some are naturally sterile or choose not to have children, but a large number are involuntarily childless. They prioritized career and politics, then tried to find a partner when they’re past their prime. A few are single mothers by choice.

And many ended up alone while blaming men for not being interested in a 35 year old independent feminist relative to the 25 year old one without baggage.

Of those who do have children, biology means most have one child instead of the 2-3 they wanted. And others are single mothers who have just one, whereas if they had a devoted husband, it would be 2 or more.

Feminism and social justice doesn’t excise the maternal impulse. That’s why I’ve had women argue that they are a pet parent while dressing up a pet as if it were a baby.

Saw another idea why on Twitter tonite-that I hadn't pondered, but is related. Young middle class/upper income adults now have observed their parents, and frazzled families, with both parents working, and the hurry/scurry and tension that comes from working, parenting, and taking care of a house.

And they are saying, "Screw that." Even if they do have kids, they want nothing to do with having more that 1 or 2.

Immigration drives 80% of our population increase. By 2043 non-Hispanic whites will be 50% of the population, down from 63% today, and 89% in 1970. Half of the children 18 and under are minorities as classified by the USG.

The other issue is the risk of having child protective services or the police called on you for not hovering over your child. That you risk having the law come down on you for letting a 6 year old play in the yard or an 8 year old walk to the park by themselves.

Well, I can think of 62,000,000+ ideas since 1973 as to “where the babies went” in this country.

"Where did all the babies go?"

Are you kidding? Look at the creatures around us. Yuk! I took a vacation from civilization for a generation, and... What are they? They look like that Jabba the Hut character from the Star Wars movie. Where did they come from?

Folks who write about this stuff call it “The Great Replacement”.

One country has figured it out—and tightly controls immigration—while having a birthrate of over 3.

The article tells you who they are.

“these are the people who will rue the day they passed up on good moral lovely women who are attractive but not barbies... ”

These good marriageable women are 1) a minority of the female population and 2) get married by age 22 or so, give or take a few years.

The world is not the same as it was for the older generations. What you believe is reality is not.

A lot of those men passing on marriage are doing so not because no one meets their standards. They’re doing it because they’ve made an evaluation that it’s not worth it based on the available potential wives.

They are, more often than not, correct.

Your statement about regret for these men going into old age betrays a misunderstanding of the differences between male and female psychology. While growing old alone is a fear for both sexes, it looms much larger for women. Men are generally able to find meaning through means other than forming a family. Women, not nearly as much.

Not to say that millennial men don’t have their own set of problems. They do. Inaccurate evaluation of their relationship risks and benefits are not among them.

“THe problem:

1. Islam
2. College
3. Welfare
4. Feminism
5. Secularism”

This basically nutshells it. Especially 4 and 5. The rejection of God and the acceptance of foolish teaching has damaged an entire generation way past the point of any recovery.

“Yeah, it’s bleak but i don’t know what alternative we have. Hopefully western civilization can be rebuilt from the ashes of our gender politics in places like Poland or Hungary with American refugees.”

Nothing to do. Just let it burn. There is no fixing it now.
