Cyclist Deaths Are Exploding Because U.S. Cities Are Car-Friendly Death Traps
vice.com ^ | Sept 6 2019 | Jada Butler

In 2019, more and more cities across America are encouraging their residents to commute by bicycle. Cycling, of course, is good for the environment in terms of reducing pollution from car-dominant streets, and it’s a healthier way to travel.

But cities gaining new cyclists are quickly, tragically finding that they do not have the proper infrastructure to keep them safe. Cyclist fatalities have gone up 25 percent across the U.S. since 2010, and up 10 percent in 2018 itself, while all other traffic fatalities have decreased.

And it matters where you live: 75 percent of these cyclist deaths occur in urban areas. New York City became the most dangerous city for cyclists in 2019 with 19 deaths to date—almost double the total in 2018.

The broad brush is illogical. Interesting, your comment on soy boy bikers. For the Left, everything (including biking) is political.

There is no place for a bike in a modern city, period.

Mr mm does his bike riding early in the morning for the same reason.

But we live way out in the country and so city drivers are not an issue.

Deer might be more of a problem.

He also sticks to wide roads with good shoulders.

Cycling deaths are exploding because of the coarsening of society, motorists refusing to see bicyclists as humans who are exceedingly vulnerable, especially to the steel death traps they operate.

No, the fault does not reside exclusively on one side. There are too many people who've never learned to play well with others. Some travel on two wheels, some on four.

No, that's not the problem, the problem is that motorists refuse to see that the safest solution to that conflict lies under their left foot, not their right.

The roads were built for cars. It makes no sense to allow traffic to be slowed down by somebody riding at bicycle speeds.

Today I saw a bike rider in a road lane with a car coming up as it rounded a bend in the road. I yelled over to him that a car was behind him. He moved over to the entirely separate bike lane. Separated by a curb and grass then the bike lane but this “professional” bike rider (funny looking outfit) wanted to ride in the road where 3 ton vehicles drive on at 40mph.

The lunacy of too many here is becoming quite a factor. Ignorant stupidity is unbecoming.

There was an intentional hit by a driver on a cyclist, killing the 20 year old just 20 miles from here. The driver was charged with manslaughter. He was trying to take outTWO bicylists - the first one dodged the murderous fool.

Obviously people with such murderous views about cyclists deserve punishment by imprisonment - This one will be.. People with the views that bicycles should not be on the road are virtually all LARD AZZes who are envious that someone could be healthy enough to use a bicycle for miles and miles as transportation, recreation... Snowflakes? as one of the lowlifes here in this thread put it? I would whip your azz up one side and down the other if you try your ILLEGAL BULL MANURE around me and I get the chance. You people expressing this were quite obviously ALSO just not raised right.

and Colorado Doug, you had to change the context of my statement to fit your pathetic narrative - SPEAKING OF PROTECTED SNOWFLAKES.

No. I’m more of a smart ass. You ride what you like. (Though wearing those spandex girdles requires me to laugh)

I rode motorcycles for the decade of the 70s in nasty crowded streets.

Fast or slow 2 wheels require much more alertness than most 4 wheel vehicles. Be aware and don’t assume the motorist next to you /behind gives a s*it.

Same here on motorcycles on those same roads - besides chicks dig my spandex look ; ) which at 65 is a bit welcome.

I ride with that assumption that they don’t see me or give a sh*t - but when an obvious “brushing” takes place my invitation for discussion has been occasionally offered. Lard butts doing that usually are chickensh*ts and frankly, I don’t want to get physical anyway

Once I was riding on a two lane rode on a 750!honda. I turned my right turn signal on and used the right turn ‘hand’ signal. Guy behind me passed me .... on the RIGHT. Inches to spare, he barley missed me. I didn’t make the turn but followed him to the next light. pulled to his right door planted my right foot on the ground and repeatedly kicked his right front door till I think it started to cave in. He leaned on his horn but by then I was gone and he was pinned in by the car in front of him. I rode around the block and headed back to where I was heading.

It sounds to me like there is a Darwin award with your name on it somewhere. It’s only a matter of time. Enjoy your hostile cycling until that day when you crowd one too many 8,000 pound trucks. Your epitaph can read”but I had the right of way, the lard azz that didn’t see me didn’t” That’ll show em.

I cycle and am not a liberal. It’s tons of fun. I’ve lost 27 lbs doing it.
Fortunately I live in Fort Worth and there trails all along the river for 60 miles to ride on.
