I read a book titled “Hotel California” about all the startups that came to fame in the mid 1960’s in places like the Troubadour.

Truly a fascinating book. If the adult me could go back to that time with my current bass and guitar playing skills and an understanding of where all this stuff actually went, I’d be a household name today. Easy peasy.

i.e. it didn’t really take all that much.

That being said, some were simply destined to be famous (coupled with the opportunity of that day). Folks like Linda Ronstadt and those that could write really good songs and master their instrument/voice.

But those days are gone, just as the days you could head west in a wagon and claim a bunch of prime real estate are gone. Each time has it’s own opportunities that are easy to spot in hindsight.

The article is a massaged re-write of one that was published last week and doesn’t even give credit to the original author even though the current writer stole entire paragraphs.

No talent necessary either.

It’s tough for new bands, because they are still competing with all of the music that came before them.

Take Greta Van Fleet, ok I get they are good, but people are only going to think of them as a “Led Clone” band.

Every so often I watch the latest rock concerts on MTV Glastonbury rtc.

All the rock groups so alike, very androgynous and no catchy lyrics.

The 70’s and 80’s rock I experienced will live forever.

… there’s the litany of legends felled by illness, drugs, and just plain old age in more recent years: George Harrison, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty. …
Funny how they put cult-status nobodies like Reed and Cohen in there and no mention of people such as Malcolm Young or Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister—never mind that Chuck Berry is utterly ignored.

I vote for a focused “big one” that would remove all people incapable of logical thought in H-wood. That should pretty well eliminate the vast majority of our “stars” and force a reboot which might actually produce something approaching art once again.

John Paul Jones 73
Steven Tyler 71
Ringo Starr 79
Justin Hayward 72
Steve Howe 72
Jon Anderson 74
Rick Wakeman 70
Joni Mitchell 75

The list goes on and on.

Who is author of the article Captain Obvious?

I am amazed some have lived as long as they have.

“Yes. And the influence of these 60’s people was bad.”

Simple people are influenced by whatever hero strikes their fancy. It could just as easily have been water polo.

It’s the choice of the simple person whom they worship and emulate.

Lord knows there were and are better “heroes”, but the people made their choice.

“Like the golden age of movies and the stars it created; they lived, the died, we mourned, and moved on. As far as Rock goes - at least we will always have their music...”

And now we’re on the chopping block next - it’s almost like there is some expectation that they’re immortal... besides Keith Richards, who should probably be studied by science.

I don’t even have to read past the title to know this is one of the dumbest things that will be posted on the internet today.

there’s more good music now than ever. I can stream all day and constantly hear *NEW* bands that play music I like. I’m 58 and the music scene online is more vibrant than radio or records ever were.

Sure the big labels and mass conglomerates, those greedy and censorious, and incompetent behemoths are nearly dead and good riddance, but the ‘music industry’ is not the entirety of music, actually they are the trailing end, indeed the excrescence of it.

Go to spotify or or Pandora, start with some musicians or bands, or songwriters you like; the world is a heck of a lot bigger, and better, than corporate A&R droids would have one believe.

Also, successful lawsuits against bands and songwriters for “copying” something as simple as a few bars of rhythm, because it “kinda sounds like” the drum beat in some old famous song, sort of stimeys the whole thing.

The best of the singer/songwriters, Tom Waits, will be 70 in December.

At one time, his live-in girlfriend was Rickie Lee Jones who appeared on the back cover of TW's great "Blue Valentine" album.

Throughout history, music has changed style and tempo as a result of wars and international upheavals. What is next only God knows.

Yeah, there’s just dozens of Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Heartbreakers etc. out there that nobody knows about.

/s

The reality is there are a few one-hit wonders. That’s it.

Archies anyone?

On a side note, I’m developing a new appreciation for Herb Alpert and the TJB.

Fun facts...
Herb Alpert recorded on the "A&M" label
Herb was the "A" in A&M

For some reason, I now feel like some whipped cream for desert....
