The Fashion Industry Has a Plus-Size Problem. These Women Want to Fix It

“Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”

It’s advice we’ve all likely heard at some point throughout our careers. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve written it in the pages of a magazine at least once in the near decade I’ve worked in fashion. The thinking goes as follows: If you want your bosses to see you as someone who can take on more authority, you need to act that way. Part of that demonstration is in how you present yourself.

For thin women, it’s good advice. I can still recall the outfits I wore to land each of my jobs “a million girls would kill for.” A fit-and-flare Kate Spade dress with teal-blue peep-toe pumps (it was 2013 and for a cheeky teen magazine). A fitted black sheath with a tweed Tibi blazer and pointy Louboutins. In hindsight, shopping for those interviews was easy. Sure, I was stressed and wanted to look perfect, but it was nothing a quick trip to Barneys after work couldn’t fix.

Then earlier this year I found myself at a place in my career where I was ready to take on more ownership. I’d just turned 30, landed my own video series, had already been managing a growing number of responsibilities—and I also had recently gained 60 pounds.

That last part is important, because as I started looking to my mentors for guidance, suddenly the very advice I’d clung to as I climbed my way up the ladder had landed me flat on my (now size 14) ass. One told me to work on my “presentation,” while another flat-out told me I needed to “dress better.”

“Plus-size women represent 68% of shoppers”
____________________________________________
In the 1980s, I wove fabric and turned it into clothing. I made many simple styles that were easily adjusted to various sizes.

One customer said to me:”Why don’t more designers make clothes for big women? After all, we have all the money.”

That said, I don’t recall _that_ many really large women.

And sizing has long been fungible. I sold retail clothing during high school and college (1960s). We were advised to switch tags to a smaller size if that’s what it took to make the sale.

I don’t like fat meat. My younger son takes after me; after dinner, we both have big chunks of fat remaining on our plates.

Me, too. It’s the texture I dislike.

Plenty of flavor in lean meat if it’s not cooked to death. And plenty of ways to add moisture/flavor if needed.

Fat doesn’t make fat. Carbohydrates and calories overall do.

Women will continue to be fat for as long as there are men willing to sleep with them

I don't know much about women's fashion (or men's fashion, for that matter). But if we're talking about clinically obese women, these women need to face their health issues instead of expecting the rest of the world to pretend that they're fine and just need styles to fit them. Fat people have more important things to worry about and take care of than the fashion industry.

In Việt Nam in 2003 when I first went back there the only heavy folks I saw were bureaucrats. Every time I go back the population is taller and heavier. Last year the street scene in Sài Gòn was very like the street scene in any American city. Rising prosperity does that. A nation is rich when there are authority figures and popular personalities advising people how to eat to lose or not gain so much weight. In that same time the incidence of diabetes has steadily climbed to become now a widespread problem that government talking heads talk their heads off about.

I’m a woman, and I’m offended by her showing off that cleavage crack.

These women aren’t “skinny” they are gigantic. It isn’t healthy at all. There is a middle that most people are at.

Celebrating overweight humans is similar to celebrating mental disorders - i.e. homosexual lifestyle choice, pedophilia, etc...

Yes, there is no WAY even at her largest Monroe was anywhere near what a size 14 is today... sorry to pop that bubble folks.

But to the topic of the article....

YOU LITERALLY WORK IN AN INDUSTRY THAT IS ALL ABOUT THE SUPERFICIAL AND LOOKS.... THEN YOU GET UPSET WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED BY YOUR OWN????

MAYBE YOU SHOULD RETHINK WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING.... Just a thought.

And, I say this as a guy who likes curvy and rubenesque women...

I don’t care what the style is, there are some things you will NEVER look good in if you are over a certain size, no matter how well tailored.

Refusing to accept that what may be IN is a train wreck on you, is ridiculous. IF you are a bigger girl, I have problem that you want to dress your “style”.. but if you think at 250 or 300lbs you can pull off certain types of clothing, and look good, you are just fooling yourself.

Those measurements indicate that Marilyn was a slender woman. Not tiny, but slim.

eating real food (as from nature) is a good start not the processed/packaged low carb, low fat, low sugar, low sodium stuff that the body can’t digest and use properly as it can food in more natural state.

ketotype eating - long term - is missing some important nutrients. Trading one problem for another. Just because it may not catch up with you or others for a few more decades doesn’t mean it’s healthier. Most people on keto etc may do well short term to reduce or avoid certain carbs but the body needs them - it’s fuel the body was designed to work well with. Sure the body can burn other things as fuel but it’s like putting wrong fuel in your car, at some point problems occur.

Men’s sizes have changed too. Go take your pants and a tape measure, and measure the waist, from button to hole. You will generally find it bigger than the label size.

I’m going with paleo. I eat meat, unprocessed veggies, fruit, nuts. It’s been working for me.
