One thing that will always be a disappointment from Trump.

He came into this as an outsider, but didn’t go outside to fill these positions. He could have found MAGA candidates with some effort. Just kept choosing Belfast people hoping for MAGA results. The consequences are his to bear mostly.

I can’t think of too many prominent Trump loyalists outside government who would even want a job in Washington.

Keep in mind that if Trump had his way, Michael Cohen would have been his pick for the U.S. Attorney General post. And I’m only half joking about that.

There is an entrenched apparatus that runs the White House. The national, international and economic issues that faced newbie Trump in the first days of his administration seemed to him greatly more important than office staffing. To him, having been a tough boss for decades, you tell your personnel staff to hire loyal people and they just do that. He has been confounded by the essential duplicity and selfshness of DC operatives.

I recall a story soon after he took office about the head of the White House personnel office put out an order that no one who volunteered for the Trump campaign or identified themselves as interested in MAGA should be hired. It took our President some time to work out that many of the jackals attracted to working in DC are natural weasels and jackals.
