"To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow." -- Metrodorus, 4th c BC Greek philosopher
"Heaven and earth are large, yet in the whole of space they are but as a small grain of rice. How unreasonable it would be to suppose that, besides the heaven and earth which we can see, there are no other heavens and no other earths." -- Teng Mu, 13th c AD Chinese philosopher

My late husband was born in 1929 about six miles from the University of Iowa where VanAllen and others were doing space research. When he was 10, he and another boy saw something that amazed them. Remember this was 1939, when Hitler just started on his conquest of Poland, Great Britain, etc. The boys saw a large red glowing round object hovering near the Iowa River. Then it suddenly swooped up into the air and shot out of sight behind the hills of Hills, Iowa. At any rate my husband thought that UFOs were real.

Regarding the calf, I have heard that some predator animals/birds will go after the privates first, and if that were the case and they were frightened away it could end up looking pretty weird. Which is not to say that aliens are not real and looking in on us.

There are numerous accounts of similar sightings in the 18th and 19th centuries.

I love the episode of frasier when he’s taping an interview with John Glenn for his radio show, and Glenn is alone in the studio, talking into the mic, while Frasier and Roz are arguing in the control booth. Senator Glenn starts to talk about the things they’d seen out there, unexplainable things. The show keeps cutting back to the Roz and Frasier fight, and eventually you basically hear Glenn say that there are aliens out there. Then he sees they are taping and he has second thoughts and says “I’m going to need that tape” and takes it and leaves. No one else (except the viewers) knew what he had just said. Very funny.

‘Bout covers its.

Shibumi and I had long discussions about “aliens” and we were of the same accord.

They are deceivers bent on misleading people.

While the modern UFO era started with Kenneth Arnold, your late husband's 1939 sighting was one of the many that precede Arnold, and go back into the pages of history, including the Foo Fighters of WWII and the Flaming Onions of WWI. Cattle mutilations have always remained more of a curiousity for me, but the possible scavenging isn't part of it -- the unexplained aspects are lack of blood, tracks, feces, and discarded guts, and absence of known causes of death of the animal. Mostly the animal is found isolated some distance from the rest of the herd. Coyote kills are always messy (this is based on what I've seen of them here in MIchigan, they're slobs) and ineffective predators for deer (they tend to eat domestic pets, rabbits, other small wildlife).
