Carli Lloyd Receives Offer to Become First Woman to Kick in an NFL Preseason Game

Carli Lloyd

An NFL team has offered women’s soccer star Carli Lloyd the chance to become the first woman to kick in an NFL preseason game, after she drilled a 55-yard field goal at the Eagle’s training camp.

Why the NFL would put a woman in a position of being injured is anyone’s guess.

Lloyd uncorked her kick after being invited to the Philadelphia Eagles training session last week, and video of the kick went viral, Fox Sports reported.

This week, Lloyd’s trainer, James Galanis, noted that the soccer star had been approached by several other NFL teams to play for them in a preseason game.

“The one that called today, I don’t want to say who it is, was willing to put her on the roster for their next (game). They were willing to put her on the roster,” Galanis told Fox Sports.

However, that deal may not occur. “She was told (she could) play on Thursday, the NFL game, but she is playing Thursday with the national team, so that was the conflict,” the trainer added.

Kickers , both place kickers and punters, use a starting half step, a full step and then a kick step. Any more and it is back in your face!

Watched the tape of her making that 55-yarder. She takes an extra step to develop the distance. She might not get that kick away with a rush.

Most kickers can split the uprights from 60 or 70 yards away...in practice. In game situation kick-offs the kickers will routinely put the ball through the end-zone from their own 35. So 55 yards in a non-game situation isn't anything to write home about. It's a publicity stunt. But on the other hand if she can hit consistently from 55 under game conditions then that's different. Only one way to find out.

"Carli Lloyd would be a good choice"

Yep! However, not sure whether she would choose McDonalds or Burger King as the optimum choice... IAC, she is also a good choice as a parts delivery man for Advanced Auto...

Endless list of choices...

She’ll fall down in “trying” to tackle the guy like a lot of kickers do.

What happens if she kicks off and the return man doesn’t get tackled and she’s in the way?

The sentiment I've heard is that she would be ordered after kicking to run directly off the field. That's how I'd coach her. Kickers both male and female should NOT be involved in tackling. I don't care if it saves a touchdown. Their legs are way too valuable all season long.

How many times have we seen kickers get in the way and try some silly looking leg-whip to attempt to bring a runner down. Too much risk all around.

What I'D worry about most is if she were to get a field goal blocked. Then it becomes a free-for-all and she ends up directly in the middle of it. Blocked kicks all to often become fair game to blast the kicker.

That said, I believe that a woman will play in the NFL at some point. And that will be as a kicker. Anybody who can drill a 55 yarder deserves a shot. I haven't heard a lot about how consistent she is however. Somebody ought to put her in pads and try her out during an inter-squad practice simulating game conditions. Try about 10 kicks from each hash from short, medium, and long range. See how she does.

... without taking 4-5 steps. A FG kicker gets 2 steps or the kick will get blocked.

I just saw that on video. I didn't realize she had taken so many steps when she kicked. She was a good 5 yards behind the holder. That's not going to fly in the NFL.

I don’t think she can even come close to the goal line with her kick-offs

There may be several punters that are able to do it. A team could consider reversing the traditional roles and giving the punter two jobs and the placekicker one.

Remember the NFL years when there wasn’t any soccer style kickers? They just lined up straight behind the holder not off to the side. To my knowledge straight on kickers are extinct even in college.

You're correct. The last on I remember was Mark Mosely back in the mid-80's. As a kid, I remember Don Cockroft in the 70's. Don't remember ever seeing a straight-on kicker since Mosely.

As publicity stunts go, this is a pretty good one. Heck, if Bill Veek could send a midget up to bat, let Carli Lloyd kick in a preseason game.

At age 37, Carli isn't looking to switch sports and begin a football career. She may continue to play in the NWSL for a few more years, but this is her last go-around on the USWNT. I'd be surprised if she's on the Olympic roster next year. She's had a great career, but it's drawing to a close. So why not have a little fun with the NFL thing. It's good publicity for the NWSL, and it doesn't hurt the NFL.

That said, she'd be an asset for the NFL. At least she wouldn't go home and beat up her girlfriend. She's married. To a man. She's not a kneeler. Like most of the women on the national team, she keeps her personal life reasonably private. As far as I know, she's a model citizen off the field, a reminder that good things somehow still come out of New Jersey. As a soccer player, she's far more fit than most NFL players, but no one should hold that against her.

She has become an icon mainly through hard work. She's a big gal and uses her size well, but she was never among the most technically skilled U.S. players. She's a throwback to the days when the U.S. team could dominate through sheer athleticism. There was no way the USWNT was going to win the 2015 World Cup until Carli got hot and went on a scoring rampage. The 2015 defense was superb, but offensively Carli carried the show.

Due to her age, most of us figured that 2015 was her last cycle on the national team. But she has always been known for her work ethic, and she basically willed herself onto the 2019 team. She improved her game technically (always her weak spot), was in fanatically good condition (much harder in middle age), and adapted gracefully to coming off the bench. She ended up contributing significantly to the 2019 tournament results. Good job, Carli. But it's just about over.

If she does kick in an NFL game, I'd guess it will be a one-and-done stunt in a preseason game. The opponent will be told to play legit defense, but to be very, very careful about protecting the kicker. That's a fine line to walk, but it's no different than putting a red shirt on a quarterback or kicker in a live scrimmage situation. Everyone will understand that's it's a preseason gimmick, and no one will want to be the bum who hurts the girl.

Adam Vinatieri can not take a hit from a 300 pound lineman either. He is the best kicker ever to play in the NFL.
I know he is a little older now.

However, most kickers best play is to try and get in the returners way and push them out of bounds. They almost never can make an open field tackle.

I to think this is a publicity stunt. However, I think most fans would like to see it just to see the young lady try to make a play on the kick off returner. What might happen would be that the other 10 guys let the runner through to her just to prove a point.

Anyway, the after game shower scene might be interesting.

A great one was Tom Dempsey who kicked with half a foot ... retired in 1979 I think.

How fast can she get off the field after she kicks 7yrds behind the line?

She’s crazy if she even considers it.

A 255lb linebacker running full speed will do severe damage to a 120lb woman. She may not wake up.

You can’t waste a spot on the roster for Just a field goal kicker.

For a consistent FG/XP kicker, that's not a waste, it's points. What surprises me, though, is that teams have not taken fast, tough backup defensive backs or linebackers and trained them to kick off. Win-win!
