The drone ran low on energy and ‘FLEW BACK’?
Is that what drones do when they run out of energy, they boomerang back to their starting points?
That sounds like a Wiley Coyote type situation. Worst case scenario.

In this case it does sound like Wylie Coyote, but most of the amateur commercial drones have features to prevent loss like a 'return to base' if the battery level drops below a designated level or if it loses the RF command link to the pilots controller.

Yes, almost all civilian models also do this. It takes a GPS location when it is launched, and if they get out of range or the battery gets low they automatically return back to where they came from so that you don’t have to go chase it down. In most cases it is a handy feature, but obviously not in this case.
