MeToo gone wild: The New Yorker goes after Trump's favorite artist
American Thinker ^ | August 26, 2019 | Monica Showalter

Has the reach of #MeToo finally come for Renoir? ... The piece, titled "Renoir's Problem Nudes" has doozies like these: Who doesn’t have a problem with Pierre-Auguste Renoir? A tremendously engaging show that centers on the painter’s prodigious output of female nudes, “Renoir: The Body, the Senses,” at the Clark Art Institute, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, sparks a sense of crisis. The reputation of the once exalted, still unshakably canonical, Impressionist has fallen on difficult days. Never mind the affront to latter-day educated tastes of a painting style so sugary that it imperils your mind’s incisors; there’s a more burning issue. The art historian Martha Lucy, writing in the show’s gorgeous catalogue, notes that, “in contemporary discourse,” the name Renoir has “come to stand for ‘sexist male artist.’ ” Renoir took such presumptuous, slavering joy in looking at naked women—who in his paintings were always creamy or biscuit white, often with strawberry accents, and ideally blond—that, Lucy goes on to argue, the tactility of the later nudes, with brushstrokes like roving fingers, unsettles any kind of gaze, including the male. I’ll endorse that, for what it’s worth. ... (Whisper: Wait till this guy hears about Caravaggio.)

I did think the nudes in Playboy were exquisitely beautiful, and loved the cartoons. But I also thought that the nude of Senator Scott Brown in Playgirl was phenomenal. Went to one of his barbecue fundraisers. He’s a lovely man with a lovely family. So sorry the seat went back to the Dems.

Fascinating article, but Gauguin is one of my least favorite artists. When looking for images to skip in an impressionist video, his are always the first choice.

Reminds me of how I reacted to Bruegal and Bosch, the research area of my art history adviser, so a class I was forced into.

There are enough beautiful images of men and women together without going into Gauguin. Like Manet’s Luncheon in the Grass.

Not too deep into artists...but I truly appreciate a varied group - Picasso, Edward Hopper and Van Gogh.

LOVE Hopper and much of Van Gogh. Love Picasso up until he finished the Pink and Blue periods. I always spent time standing in front of that Hopper cafe. There is something about the cleanliness of that image and the size of that piece that just takes you over. Your Van Gogh was magnificently shown in the Dr Who Van Gogh episode when they dissolved between the painting and the actual cafe where the Doctor is looking for Van Gogh.

This is one of his most famous portraits. I think it's sublime. Its held at a house museum outside Zurich and I managed to view it.

I never cease to be amazed by that Hopper painting - it was also used in a GREAT little cable series, “Dead Like Me”. The episode was titled “Nighthawks” and also featured another Hopper painting. There is a certain starkness to his paintings that touches me deeply.

I am not a Dr Who fan but caught a snippet of the Van Gogh episode w/Amy Pond - extraordinarily moving segment. I was blown away and rediscovered my appreciation of Van Gogh.

To this day, I am still not a Dr Who fan but REALLY enjoy the Matt Smith/Amy Pond series.

There are just some Doctors that turn me on and some that don’t. I do love David Tennant and Matt Smith. And Amy Pond and her husband Rory were some of the BEST companions.

There are a lot of Amy Pond videos in my Doctor Who playlist.

What I’d recommend is:

Dr Who - Ruby Tuesday - The Rolling Stones

Dr Who - Song for a Winter’s Night - Sarah McLachlan

You may have seen this but I discovered the “epilogue” of Rory/Amy, their son and Rory’s father, Brian - very well done short animation.

“in contemporary discourse” among politically correct Soros clones.

The left stinks up anything it touches.

What shocks me is my own idiocy in not seeing this coming. I knew that museum curators were modifying historical exhibits. It just never entered my head that they could do it to art of the past, as opposed to applauding disgusting works of political art.

Similarly, a few years ago an idiot lady ‘music critic’ got attention for claiming that the Scherzo of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony showed that Beethoven “had the mind of a rapist.”

Jaw dropped.

Will take a few minutes to get it back in place.

Are they crazy????

Why do I even ask? Of course, they’re crazy.

That picture is of Renoirs daughter. Like many artists Renoir painted family and friends. The “Luncheon of The Boating Party” is a good example.
