I checked out the Golf R and in a VW site I found, the starting size of the engine is a two liter four cylinder engine, not 1.6 unless he installed a different engine.
I owned a 1958 VW Bug with a Porsche 356 engine in it, but it wasn’t stock for sure and the 1.6 litre, overhead valve 4 cylinder with 2 valves per cylinder was capable of 115 MPH. But getting there was an adventure as the bug didn’t want to handle well at those speeds due to over reacting and trying to get airborne.
But nothing in the article led me to think this was a souped car, just a family car in Germany. Hence my comment.
