I may have missed it but the article seems to have omitted that Alaric was a Christian also - an Arian Christian but still one.

I think it's generally believed that the Gothic warlords were "Arian Christians in name only". They certainly didn't behave like Christians as the monk points out in the article above. That said, the article does point out that Alaric was willing to spare the treasure of the churches of Rome and even make sure they received safe passage to sanctuary at St. Peter's basilica.
