Weekly Garden Thread August 24-30, 2019
August 24, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 08/24/2019 6:00:41 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

The zoo might be fun.

I think I read it’s the oldest zoo in California?

No, they are quilts and are absolutely gorgeous. I’ve been to a few National Quilt shows and literally my jaw drops and gets sore from it, there are some astonishing quilters out there. The quilts similar to these which are more art, are just stunning. I’ve done some big quilts in my younger days. Even had one published in a book on quilts. But I like smaller projects that don’t take so long to finish. Thanks for posting. Forgive my thread slide into quilting.

That recipe is a saver. Looks delicious. I don’t have any prosciutto but I do have homemade capicola and tomatoes I am looking to do something with. And I have peppers.

Wow just saw the rest of your pictures. I could spend an hour just looking at the jams and jellies. Our county fair is strictly a youth fair. Do they have a pie category? Had Lady Bender entered? Her pies look fabulous.

Plus it is low carb. My favorite way to have eggs is poached like that with a still runny yolk.

Thanks for sharing that; it just warms my heart that people still put in the effort! :)

I have a crocheted afghan waiting for a Blue Ribbon. ;) Our fair has come and gone so I’ll have to enter it next year!

This is our neighbor boy Cody and his County Fair 2019 Grand Champion horse, Duke. Cody and his twin brother, Jesse, have been on horseback since they were toddlers. Those boys are either on a horse or riding their bikes; I don't think I've ever seen either of them actually WALK on their own, LOL! They raise, train and sell ponies and their folks have a very impressive stable operation with dozens of horses and are our closest neighbors. Just really nice boys, being raised well. The twins turned twelve this June.

Produce & Garden Tour 8-25-19. Ridgeway Township, WI. Zone 4-5. Longitude: N 42.998521 Latitude: W -89.993242, LOL! :)

Green Bell Peppers FINALLY big enough to harvest - plenty more on the vine, yet. Zucchini plants are still producing. Nothing better!

The last of the 'Velour' bush beans and I may get one more small picking off of the 'Saychelle' pole green beans. Some basic Roma-type tomatoes.

Got the first garden bed cleaned out - this will hold fall salad greens: Spinach, lettuces, beets, radishes, etc. Waiting on tomorrow's rain, then I'll plant. Still PLENTY of Kale left to eat; left corner. (Always!)

Cucumbers are still climbing, flowering and producing. I picked a basket-full today. Pickle Relish! Yay!

Re-staked the pepper plants. Still quite a few on there; some I am just waiting to size up and some I want to go to red before picking. Hurry up! Actually, I'm amazed at how well they did with our cool, wet growing season!

I am SO in LOVE with this perennial Salvia called, 'Mysty.' Bought three starts from Jung's and it is a knockout performer! I plan on using this when I re-do the puppy-demolished landscaping across the front of the house. It'll pick up that 'Renwick Heather' paint color accent in the gables. Can't wait!

Roma tomatoes blighted beyond belief, BUT the fruits will still ripen and be just fine. Will use for Salsa and drying.

Dug me some Taters, too! Kennebeck and Red Norland. I have eight more hills to dig, but unless things turn wet, wet, wet, they're perfectly happy staying in the ground.

And that is how I spent my day. Happy, Happy! Days like today have been RARE this season. It's either been raining, so bloody hot you want to shoot yourself, or...raining, LOL! Plans for tomorrow include all manner of canning and freezing. It's supposed to be a rainy day - and amazingly, we need it! Kinda dusty around here these days, though the guy that rents our crop land (112 acres) is rushing to get the 3rd cutting of hay in this afternoon. It's always something!

LOL! You and I have asked each other to wed many times through the years, haven’t we? Let’s always keep the Kindred Spirit we have going, shall we? :)

And Laz would cry if I married you. Who would make him Sammiches? LOL! ;)

Besides - I’m a little scared of Mrs. Bender! She knows how to use power tools and a shovel and she has a LOT of garden beds that I could end up...UNDER, LOL!

*SMOOCH*
