She may have been quite completely out of her mind. Bad trouble, lethal trouble for herself and everyone within driving distance, but subjectively --- perhaps --- blameless.

I didn’t see that in the article, but may have missed it. Was she using drugs? I read it and thought she just had mental health issues.

I dunno, sounds like it could be undiagnosed bipolar or something to me. The “she was always high-spirited around me” comment fits perfectly with a bipolar person in “manic” mode. When they are up, they are really up, and then suddenly they are really down.
