Officially, it’s 1.716 million. (It’s probably more now.) This is barely eclipsed by the Norfolk-Portsmouth-Virginia Beach-Hampton Roads SMSA. Barely. Last count: 1.728 million.
Both are bigger than some metro areas that have teams.
That story is a few years old — the Las Vegas NHL franchise has actually been playing for 2 or 3 seasons.
Going over the MSA, I just don’t see anything bigger than Portland without at least 1 of the 4 major league team sport franchises.
