Full Title: Set Your Air Conditioning to 78 Degrees During the Day, 82 Degrees at Night, Federal Agencies Recommend

Looking to beat the heat without breaking the bank? Energy Star, the federal program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy, has some tips — but you might not like them.

Energy Star recommends that, in order to reduce costs and energy usage, you should set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible through the summer.

Specifically, they say you should set your thermostat to 78 degrees while you’re home.

Spending the day out? Turn that thermostat up 7 degrees to 85.

Then, when you finally hit the hay, the federal program recommends setting your thermostat to 82 degrees.

They add that, if you’re using a ceiling fan, you can even turn up the temperature another 4 degrees without losing any comfort.

Open the windows at night? So I can let in 90+ degree heat and massive humidity? I think not.

I love when it gets cool enough here to open the house. We get a great cross breeze. But that is not happening in July.

You don’t live in New Orleans or Houston

I grew up 140 miles due north of New Orleans

It was routinely 95-105 and humidity 75-90

And I did not have AC till 1972 at age 15

I lived in Manhattan in old floor through apartments sans air conditioning

Upper Nyack too

London

Even high up near Rio and higher elevations Jamaica and Colombia too

But to live that way in Jackson Mississippi now

No way

Folks can live without air conditioning in maybe two thirds the country

Yes. I visited Louisiana in March. It was like a steam bath. Had a chance to relocate to Sugarland Houston for business. No way. Everyday would be a bad hair day.

Obama Cranks Up White House Thermostat: “You Could Grow Orchids In There”

Hey, remember all that fuss about how Obama was bucking tradition by not wearing his suit jacket in the Oval Office? And how it was going to be much more casual in there? Well, there’s this other side to it: energy waste...

“He’s from Hawaii, O.K.?” said Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”

Better idea, stop pissing billions of dollars of our money on assholes telling us how to live, fire them all, and turn off their AC in their abandoned office space. Win/Win...when they lose!

Yup. I’m unimpressed by the “omg men set thermostats to be so cold” when they equally freak out “omg it’s so hot” when set 2 degrees warmer. She wants it 65 in summer and 78 in winter.

Good skin day though

Houston is a draw I never gathered though I lived there myself in 1981 a bit

Westheimer and Dairy Ashford

I do so love Texas though

I like Austin despite the loons

And being a Jackson Mississippi boy Dallas and New Orleans were our go to cities

Interestingly, daughter is doing a work-related wellness assessment program.

The material she received stated 68 is optimal room temp for sleeping...

She was shocked at the 82 degree recommendation for sleeping...

BTW, She is in medical field—works for a hospital group.

I’m guessing sleeping on wet sheets in Egypt (or the SW desert) would be effective. Everywhere else where it is 60%+ humidity levels it would make it worse.

And these guys in D.C. are idiots. Keep the house at 82 degrees at night!!?? Heck if I’m going to turn on the heat in the middle of August! (73 with a nice breeze at the moment! Seattle.)

Yeah, I’m just north of Seattle. Breeze is great. I installed aerodynamic windows almost everywhere and have ceiling fan in bedroom.

True, though, Seattle is a temperate zone. That encourages the homeless, never to hot or cold to live here.
