What adult thought this was a good idea?
I had a colleague who would use markers to draw on the faces of students who fell asleep in her class. I would never do this. It didn’t seem right to me. Some kids laughed it off and some got pissed off. No law suits however.
I used a different technique depending on the time of the day. If it was right before lunch, I’d move up the clock to after lunch, turn out the lights move the kid’s into the hallway and when the bell rang, make him think he’d slept through it. The kids eagerly played along. Otherwise dropping a large book on the floor would rouse him.
